Kaleidoscopes were invented in 1816 by Sir David Brewster a Scottish Inventor and actually pattened in 1817. Kaleidoscopes were very popular in Europe and really caught on in popularity in the United states in the Victorian Era as a Parlor Diversion and prized for their ever changing Beauty. Early models such as the Bush Parlor made in Boston was a very popular model and is still very sought by Collectors Today. Kaleidoscope toys were very popular in the 1940s and thru today. Many American toy makers such as Stevens Toys of Herman Missouri were very popular models and many are indeed resold here on E-bay. There was a real rennaisance in kaleidoscope making and kaleidoscope collecting in America in the 1970s & 1980s. Today there are many artists making kaleidoscopes that are now concidered mixed Media Art and are indeed making more than Toys.
