Highwaymen artists painted during the 50's 60's and seventies, original, raw Florida landscapes in the style of famous Florida landscape artist A.E. "Bean" Backus. The art was sold from the sides of their cars, for very little money, and are now deemed as serious art and are highly prized by collectors.
Highwaymen art was once found hanging on cheap motel walls throughout the state, now they fetch thousands of dollars, for the appreciation of folk art and Florida landscape art in general has brought their popularity to an all time high.
Highwaymen art is mysterious, for they have captured Florida's swamps, lazy rivers and flora and fauna in its native state, untouched by development, the real "old Florida" scene.
