I breed Yorkies, and once my puppies are no longer dependant on Mom, then I step in to continue the training, care, and of course love until they are presented to their new families. I have learned many things during the years of breeding this incredible dog, which I could spend hours sharing, however, I will address the number one issue when having a new puppy fill your home with love and of course accidents on the floor. I have used newspapers and puppy pads to aid in house breaking along with a crate. First newspapers - puppies love to play with them, eat them, until they look like they belong in a hamster cage. They get wet and then the puppy will walk through it and their feet are black and so is your floor and anything else they walk on. Puppy Pads - a good concept, but again the puppies will shred them and eat them. Some puppy pads have chemicals (that incourages your puppy), I don't want my puppies consuming anything in or on the pads. So, I now use baby crib pads, hospital pads, and even twin size waterproof mattress pads. They are great! Depending on the size of your puppy and or litter, you choose what size pad fits your puppies needs. They are reuseable, washable, and you can use a puppy spray on the pads to encourage puppy use. Personally, I use a yard pen, with a crate inside with the door removed for each litter. The waterproof mattress pad at one end and food, water and toys at the other and this has worked great. A Yorkie or any miniature breed puppy is often to small to be taken outside once mom is finished, or it's to cold outside, so this method may be one to consider until your puppy is bigger or it gets warmer outside, as it has worked great for me.
