Helpful Hints on Accent Lighting
Dramatic lighting effects can be achieved with accent light sources. You can decorate by highlighting architectural features, art objects and furniture groupings.
Accent lighting requires more concentrated light on the area or subject to be highlighted. A good guide to use would be at least 3 times more light output than the general lighting in the subject area.
Recessed adjustable spot lighting can highlight the rugged texture of a fireplace, a cove, a planter, interesting grillwork or a beautiful curving staircase. Low voltage recessed lighting provides dramatic intensity to fine art objects, floral arrangements and wall textures. Brilliant highlights contrast with dark shadows for a dynamic decorating effect.
Mini-pendants situated over a kitchen island will provide good light levels on the island surface. Mini-pendants should be hung 30" - 40" from the island surface depending on the size of the island.
Your accent lighting can emphasize bookshelves, high tech video equipment and curio furniture. Accent lighting adds an extra dimension to a room area that could otherwise be lost in darkness and proper accent lighting tends to make a room look much larger than it actually is.
