Helpful hints for listing a Boy Scouts of America (BSA) manual / handbook / guidebook:

• Post a picture of the cover. This helps somewhat in identification.
• Put key searched for phrases in the listing title, such as BSA, Cub Scout, Boy Scout, manual, handbook, or guidebook, as applicable.
• Put the title or parts of the title of the book in the listing title.
• Put BSA's book # in the title, or at least the listing description. The older manuals from national supply had 4 digit #s. The newer manuals from national supply have 5 digit #s. Some of the catalog #s, whether they be 4 or 5 digits, have a letter after them, indicating a revised version. Bin items, ordered by councils directly from BSA's various dividions, have a dash in the #, such as 26-001. Not every national BSA publication had a #, but for those that do, the # can usually be found on the back side of the title page or on the back cover. Listing the BSA is most helpful to collectors looking for specific items, issues, varieties, etc.
• What edition & printing is it? If that information is in the book put that in the listing description. This information is most common in Boy Scout Handbooks.
• When was it published? Put the copyright date, printing date, & any revision date, if listed, in the listing description as well.
• What type of manual is it? You can describe that in the listing description. Is it an administrative manual, dealing with membership / recruitment, finance / fundraising, health & safety / risk management, or publicity / marketing? Or is it a program handbook, for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Explorers, Sea Explorers, Sea Scouts, Air Scouts, Venturers, or Order of the Arrow? Or is it a camp manual, such as for leaders or staff? Or is it for professionals, commissioners, or district or council committee members?
• Was it printed for a particular anniversary? If so, note that in the listing description. Some special editions of the handbooks, have been printed for such an occasion. Examples include manuals for the 50th anniversary of Cub Scouting in 1980, the 75th anniversary of Boy Scouting in 1985, & the 75th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow in 1990. The anniversary logo can be found on the front or back cover, though sometimes it is on the title page.
• Was it printed for a particular event? If so, mention that in the listing description. Examples include manuals printed especially for a National Jamboree or National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). The event will be listed on the front cover or on the title page.
• Be sure to include the condition of the manual in the listing description. Is it in mint, excellent, good, fair, or poor condition? If it is still in plastic wrap from national, be sure to include that in the listing description. Be specific as possible about cover wear, corners bent or ripped, stains, etc. Is there any extraneous writing on the cover or the pages, such as a name inside or the advancement pages signed off on? Collectors know the vast majority of Scout manuals online are used in some form, so do not be embarrassed about a used condition. Being up front as possible about the condition, simply helps buyers make better judgment about a purchase & reduces expectation problems when a buyer receives the item.
• Be specific as possible with any other pertinent information you can add about the manual or book. Collectors will appreciate specific, accurate information.
