I can't say I'm a makeup maven, but I do read a lot from people who are on what are the bare essentials you need for makeup. This is especially good to know on those mornings when you've somehow lost a huge chunk of time and have to make it out the door quickly!
The first thing you need is a good foundation - not one that is heavy or cakey. Leave that for the theater! I have found that mineral foundation works best for me, and my skin doesn't seem to like foundation a lot! It's easy to apply, lasts a long time, and is very kind to your skin. Make sure you buy one that is close to your skin color, and change it if your skin color changes.
Mascara is also a must-have. If done correctly, mascara opens up your eyes and brings out their best qualities. There are many colors available, but sticking to the more natural shades, such as black or brown, works best for most women - it doesn't look so artificial or fake.
If you are past "a certain age," you'll also need to darken your eyebrows. The best way is to use a powder with an angled brow brush. Pencils tend to look drawn-on and fake. Done correctly, this can make your face look thinner and bring out your eyes more.
Lastly, lip stain is a good choice for all-day coverage. Don't buy those "all-day" lipsticks - they can really dry out your lips! There are stains out there that temporarily "dye" your lips the color you wish and that provide amazingly long coverage. You might only have to apply lip gloss from time to time is you are looking for that "wet" look; otherwise, it's fuss-free!
If you have more time, you can add eyeliner on the top lid only and a neutral eyeshadow over the entire upper eyelid. Blend in the liner and make sure it isn't obvious you've lined your eyes! Remember, makeup is supposed to show the real you, only a little better! Black or brown are good choices in eyeliner, as they tend to blend in more with the mascara, not clash with it. Neutral eyeshadow is terrific, as you only need to apply a little of it over the eye and you're ready to go!
Blush is nice if you have time, and the fastest way to apply it is with a cream stick - I have found Avon carries the best kind. It is literally a stick-style blush that you twist to bring the product up, a lot like lipstick or lip balm. Smear it on at the top of your cheekbone, over the "apple" of your cheek, and blend it. Very quick!
Most of the time, though, we need very little in the way of makeup. So look at the amount of time you have, prioritize, and decide what you absolutely really need in the way of makeup. Hopefully, this will help you as you do your prioritizing. Remember - makeup is there to help you, not eat up your time. Wise use of it will do just that!
