Health Benefits of Cat Oat Grass and Cat Wheat Grass
Cats love to snack on grass! Take a cat outside during the summer and the cat will instinctively be drawn to sampling the lawn grass. However, because lawn grass is usually treated with pesticides and other lawn chemicals, it is not always safe for our kitties to eat it. Lawn grass also does not have the same nutritional value as oat grass or wheat grass. Furthermore, lawn grass has a tendency to "stick" in the back of your cat's throat which can cause gagging. Your cat may also turn to your houseplant to satisfy their grass cravings. Not a good idea since a lot of houseplants are usually poisonous! Providing fresh green oat grass or wheat grass will satisfy your kitty's craving for fresh green "living" food in their diet.
Oat grass and wheat grass are cereal grasses. The oat grass is widely cultivated for its edible seeds. Our popular breakfast oat cereals and wheat cereals are made from the seeds of these plants! The wheat grass is also widely cultivated for its commercially important grain. Athletes and other health conscious people have made juicing the wheat grass very popular. They drink the wheat juice for its high concentrated levels of vitamins and minerals. The vitamins and minerals in the grass improve your cat's overall health.
When the oat seed or wheat seed is planted it produces beautiful, healthy green blades rich in chlorophyll (a natural breath freshener), anti-oxidants (helps fights cancer), vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Both the wheat grass and oat grass aid in a healthy digestion, and help move hairballs along. Instead of coughing up the hairball, the hairball is more likely to be passed through your cat's digestive system. The grass also provides a great source of fiber (ruffage) in your cat's diet. Another added benefit is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a natural substance that makes grass green and acts as a natural breath freshener. The cat oat grass and wheat grass taste great! I've personally tasted both of the raw blades and it is actually quite delicious!
All cats, especially indoor (urban) cats, need some green in their diet.
I know that since I started giving my cats a choice of wheat and oat grass in their diet they have never been happier. I have a pot of grass growing by the window and as they look outside they instinctively chew on their grass. They have less hairballs, their breath smells sweeter, and they look healthier!
