Having been collectors of Hawkes glass for many years we are amazed at the number of fake and misrepresented items on the market.

There are items with the Hawkes name scratched in with a diamond pen, acid etched with a very large stamp and we have even seen items mispelled Hawks! This said, the largest number of misrepresented pieces are simply listed as "unsigned Hawkes" or "Hawkes ?". One has only to look at the Hawkes advertising logo: NO PIECE WITHOUT THIS TRADE-MARK ENGRAVED ON IT IS GENUINE. Hawkes did sell blanks and culled lower quality pieces, but the were not signed and thus, not genuine. Of course, some signatures wear off, in which case the item is probably worth much less anyway because of condition.

If you wish to buy and enjoy a piece of beautiful glass, do so because of it's beauty. Do not pay extra believing it is Hawkes if it is not so marked.

The two birds on the Hawkes logo are owls, by the way. The owl surmounts the ancient Hawkes family crest and so was honored by T. G. Hawkes in his own logo.
