Have you heard of Wiki?

The 'Wikipedia, free encyclopedia, say "wiki", pronounced 'wee-kee' a type of website that allows those that visit the site to make modifications to some of the content in the encyclopedia.

I can see positives to this type of encyclopedia because it allows interaction among authors and non-authors who can add to the information, content, and specific data all in one place.

There are registrations required in most cases to create an account if you wish to add, edit or even remove some of the content on the website. There has been some disruptive vandalism, but with protection in place, the encyclopedia becomes a miracle of limitless collaboration for information in interactive operations.

'Kinda' ... like... anybody on earth that has a computer can meet, interact with data and provide content to an endless tunnel filled with information.

The encyclopedia norm once was volumes and volumes of expensive books that only the affluent could afford to buy. Or, parents almost had to mortgage their home to purchase of set of for their kids.

Actually, Wiki was named by Ward Cunningham. There is an entire story behind this which I shall not detail in this review as it requires a subject of it own. However, I will note that the idea of 'wiki' can be traced back to 1980's and 1990's as public knowledgebases. The term 'wiki' is basically a collaborative software engine with common uses of communication. For years the software has been used more and more and most recently replaces many of the business, private, public intranets.

Do you use "Wiki"?

If you have not used any Wiki communities, you might try a few I have listed below. Or, if you have used any of those I do mention below, you can provide us with your knowledge and experience you may have. 'Sorta' starting our own "Wiki" platform right here in Ebay Guides and Reviews.

Showing no favorites, for any Wiki communities, I will simply list them alphabetically. That is usually the most acceptable format to access the many communities and make your own judgements and opinions on the advantages in using any "Wiki". Of course, I cannot list everyone of them.

Wiki Communities are:

Comixpedia ... webcomics

Encyclopedia Gamia (guess what this one is) If you guessed computer and video games, you are correct.

Encyclopedia Libre Universal en Espanol - Spanish language

EvoWiki ...  Evolution

Integralwiki ... Integral theory

Intellipedia ... top secret US intelligence community.
(says it is not accessible to the public - too bad - we should at least be able to add to content re: terrorists, etc.)

Javapedia ... Java (not coffee)

Jurispedia ... Law

Mac Guide ... Apple wiki

MeatballWiki ... online communities .. (no spaghetti)

Memory Alpha ... Star Trek

P2P Foundation wiki ... Peer to Peer

PhpWiki ... PHP software

PlasticsWiki ... polymers and plastic technology

ProductWiki ... editable products catalog

SourceWatch ... to influence public opinion

Uncyclopedia ... satirical of Wikipedia

Wikiasari ... search engine like a wiki

Wikibooks ... text books project of Wikipedia

Wikihow ... how to do things

Wikimapia ... city landmarks using Google maps

Wikinews ... news project of Wikipedia

Wikipedia ... World's Largest Encyclopedia

Wikiquote ... quotes

Wikisource ... Wikipedia source

Wikitravel ... travel guide

Wikitruth .. informative "atrocities"

WikiWikiWeb ... Ward Cunningham's wiki computer programming

Wookieepedia .. Stars Wars

World66 .. travel-based wiki

I have provided as many as possible in this one long informative listing and comments on what 'Wiki' means and how or when you can use them..

I hope you find this informative. It is much easier to access the information and content of what years ago could only be purchased for thousands of dollars. What a great tribute the information age really is.. Making available the information to all for all to learn and understand what makes our world work.. or not work..

This is, of course, if all have computers.. Libraries, friends, schools, business, cafes and other sources can be used to access computers, but it would be best for everyone to have the ability to own a computer in this technological information age where you can learn about Wiki and learn how to benefit from such communities.

To Be continued...
