I am devoting this guide to the subject of paranormal photographs, specifically as they pertain to online auctions for haunted dolls and other haunted or enchanted items. I have been a collector of paranormally affected objects for the past 30 years, and I also have amassed a large collection of photographs which show authentic spirit activity. I have also spent many years devoted to the study of orbs and spirit photography, something that has always been a strong interest of mine. I am offering this guide as a serious of quick tips for familiarizing yourself with simple camera tricks that are often passed off as proof of hauntings.

1. Does the photo give you double vision? I see so many photos like this, so I am guessing that many folks have discovered how to set their camera on a slow shutter speed in order to create the look of movement. If the photo of the doll or item makes you feel like you've had one too many glasses of wine, it is most certainly the result of slow shutter speed and not paranormal activity. Spirits and energies do not manifest themselves in photographs in this way. It is a simple "ghosting" effect created by slowing the shutter speed of the camera and moving the object in front of it. Grab your camera and try it for yourself, and you will never be fooled by a blurry double faced doll again.

2. Does the photo have little streaks of light shooting through it? This is also not typical of spirit energy, but it is typical of waving a light in front of the camera and adjusting the shutter speed. Did you ever try to take a photograph of fireworks and end up with a bunch of squiggly light lines and streaks by accident? This effect is created pretty much in the same way. This is another human made tactic for giving the idea that there is something supernatural about the photo.

3. Does the photo look like it was taken underwater? If the photo looks extremely glossy or smoky as if it were taken underwater, this is usually a digital effect created in Photoshop. There are various layers and effects that can be added to photos via Photoshop and many of them can create a ghostly appearance. Once you get an eye for it, it is easy to spot photos that have been digitally enhanced. They usually have a digital look to them, and you can see where they were added into the photo. If it looks like a filter, it usually is. Ectoplasm and other spirit manifestations are not usually uniform in size or shape.

The Ways That Spirits Can Manifest In Photographs

Spirit activity in photographs is a very real thing, though there are certain ways in which they do manifest themselves and have always manifested themselves. The most common ways are through orbs, ectoplasm mists and shadows. I would like to briefly outline these various manifestations of spirit phenomenon.

Orbs are spheres of spirit energy that frequently show in photographs. They occur in large quantities in haunted places and cemeteries, and are the most photographed of all photographic spirit activity. They are drawn to events and parties and also can appear around haunted objects. Dust and rain can also appear to be orbs in a photographs, so it would be wise to familiarize yourself with pictures of genuine orbs versus dust and rain. A simple search on the Internet will illustrate the difference between genuine orbs versus dust, rain, and faked orbs. Watch out for fake "balls of light" that are claimed to be orbs. Orbs are not usually dramatically illuminated.

Ectosplasm/Spirit mist is a powerful form of spirit energy that is sometimes caught on film. It is probably the second most common for of spirit that shows on film. The mist often looks like a foggy mass that envelopes a portion of the photograph. Sometimes the mist is in the shape of the human forms, and other times it is simply a mass. Smoke can sometimes look like spirit mist, but you can usually tell smoke because it is not as illuminated and non-uniform as the spirit/ecto mist is. With smoke, you can usually see "smoke curls"....usually a big sign that someone is literally "blowing smoke"! :) Spirit mist can take on many shapes and colors, and can be thick or thin. Sometimes human or animal figures can be seen within its depths.

Shadows often display themselves in photographs where there is a lot of activity of a negative nature. These entities are usually considered dark or negative, and they are very rare. I have not seen many photographs of shadow people, but they are available for viewing online. They are usually in motion or show up rarely around a person.

Just Because The Photo Looks Strange Doesn't Mean It Is Haunted.

Haunted and embodied objects very rarely show activity for the camera. Sometimes, orbs will be seen around affected objects, but usually you will have to take many photos in order to catch one orb near an object. Phenomenon like lights and mists can occur on a heavily infested object, but watch for the clues listed above in order to determine authenticity. What I have learned is that you are actually MORE LIKELY TO GET AN EVP from a haunted object than you are to get a dramatic photograph.

But...haunted items, especially dolls, do photograph differently than other items.

Because they are embodied, haunted objects tend to photograph a bit differently than other items. I have noticed this especially with dolls. They photograph in a much more animated fashion. That is, you almost get the sense that you are looking at a human being. I believe that this is because their energy is very much alive, and their facial expressions are known to change. In an authentically haunted doll, you should be able to "see" the spirit through the photographs without necessarily being psychic. I find that with my highly active dolls, their personality ALWAYS comes through in the final images. They may not photograph with smoke and all sorts of crazy lights, but you can see their personality shine through just as you would with a photograph of a living/embodied soul.

In conclusion, my advice is to look for crisp, clear photographs of the item in question. If there are genuine orbs or mist to be seen, even better, but keep in mind how rare it is for these phenomenon to occur. Double-vision sort of photos are an act of slow shutter speed, and so are streaks of light. You want to be able to get to know the spirit through the photos and see the personality and energy shine through. In a genuine enchanted item, you will even see changes to the facial expression (if it is a doll) or changes in light and forms (for other items). It never hurts to study ghost photos on the Internet so that you can get a sense of common phenomenon and faked photos or camera errors.

Best of luck in building your collection. Happy hunting!
