Hanukkah menorahs, lamps, or hanukkias in modern Hebrew, have eight candles that are regarded holy, and a ninth that is seen as the servant and kept apart. Hanukkias are lit in a wonderful ceremony during the winter holiday that celebrates the triumph of freedom and light over tyranny and darkness. Freedom is a central ideal in Jewish history -- it is also celebrated in Passover and Purim. These menorahs have received sometimes lavish artistic devotion and are now treasured by collectors and museums. Recently, those made in early Israel have found their way to EBay and are increasingly interesting to collectors, featured in the beautiful recent book 'Lighting the Way to Freedom: Early Hanukkah Menorahs of Early Israel.'
