You can walk into any store these days and find hundreds of candles in all shapes, sizes, and forms.  Almost every candle makes claims, Triple Scented, Maximum scented....Etc.  The Truth about candles is not confusing at all. I have been making candles for over 5 years and I have sorted thru all the advertising and I am going to list the Facts about candles so you can make a more informed choice next time you spend your hard earned money.

Paraffin Candles (Yankee, Old Virginia, Mainstay..etc)

  • These candles are made with the left over sludge from diesel fuel (this adds money to the major oil companies pockets)
  • Paraffin wax contains 11 known toxins 2 of which are known to cause cancer
  • paraffin wax burns at around 180 degres hot enough to burn you.
  • Burning at such a high temp. means that the fragrance oil is burned off well before the wax leaving the candle smelling like hot wax with very little fragrance
  • The black soot produced contains all the same toxins as a diesel engine ( you wouldnt start a semi and leave it run in your house)
  • mixed with chemicals to release fragrance oil
  • Paraffin Wax will hold a Maximum of 5% Fragrance oil.

Hand Poured Soy Candles

  • Soy wax is a renewable resource (grown by US Farmers)
  • Soy wax is Biodegradable, non toxic, and burns soot free
  • Cleans up with hot soapy water
  • Soy wax burns much cooler 100-105 degrees. No chance of a child or pet getting burned by hot wax.
  • Burning at a cooler temp. also releases the fragrance much more uniform and it does not burn off.
  • Soy wax candles also burn on average 30-50% longer than paraffin
  • Soy wax will hold up to 10% fragrance oil (double that of the popular mass produced candles)

There are just a few more items I would like to share.

Not all candles advertised as soy are 100% soy wax.  Many candle makers will blend soy with Paraffin to get a smoother looking candle but you loose all the benefits of a natural soy wax candle.

Ask the candle maker What Percentage of Fragrance oil they use. If they do not wish to share they are more than likely skimping to save money and increase profits.

Dont fall for the Tag lines:  Tripple Scented remember Soy was holds up to 10% Fragrance you can not put any more or it will not burn right

I hope this helps clear up any confusion you may have had on the difference between Paraffin and Soy wax.
