The Hall China Company was founded in 1903 by Robert Hall.  Originally, the Hall China Company made mostly toilet seats, whiteware, and jugs.  Robert Hall experimented continuously to perfect a glazed china without the use of lead.  In 1911, he finally succeeded in finding a lead-free glaze that was strong, non-porous, and craze proof.  At first, Hall concentrated on institutional wares before creating the Gold Decorated Teapot line.

In the 1930's and 1940's, the Hall China Company underwent several expansions.  Those expansions allowed Hall to begin a new line of decal pattern dinnerware in 1936 with its Autumn Leaf breakfast set, though the Autumn Leaf pattern was first used on mixing bowls in 1933.  This line was developed as a premium line for the Jewel Tea Company.  The Autumn Leaf pattern was decaled onto a large assortment of kitchenware, accessory pieces, and some clocks.  The Autumn Leaf pattern was finally discontinued in the mid-1970's.

Hall's first teapots were part of its institutional line.  The most popular teapot was the Gold Decorated Line.  Novelty teapots from 1938 were made in various shapes, including: automobiles, birdcages, donuts, footballs, and basketballs.

Other products from the Hall China Company:

Blue bonnet was made from the early 1950's until the mid-1960's for Standard Coffee Company.  Crocus started in the mid-1930's, Mums dated from the late 1930's, Orange Poppy was made for the Great American Tea Company from 1933 to the 1950's.  Pastel Morning Glory dates from the late 1930's, Red Poppy was a premium for Grand Union Tea Company from the mid 1930's to the mid-1950's, and the Silhouette had an all black decal and was made for Cook Coffee and Standard Coffee.  The Medallion kitchenware line was introduce in 1932 in ivory and lettuce.

Other companies made similar patterns.  The Autumn Leaf decals were used by Columbia, Crown, Harker, American Limoges, Paden City and Vernon.  The black decal that was placed on the Silhouette was also used by Taylor, Smith, and Taylor and Harker.  None of these companies are associated with Hall China Company.

Buyers should look for distinguishing marks that identify the china pieces as Hall China.  Hall China had many varieties of marks, but the most popular are: Superior Hall Quality Dinnerware, Hall's Superior Quality KitchenWare, and Hall Teapots and Oven-Proof Cooking China.
