I just wanted to add my two cents regarding this laptop. I have owned it since 27 Aug 05, and bought it at $1529. Mine is a dv1340us, which comes with 1.86GHz CPU, 1.024GB of RAM, and 100GB HDD. It also comes with the multimedia reader, DVD RW w/ LightScribe, 802.11 g/b wireless and bluetooth, as well as 3 USB and 1 Firewire port. Plus remote control for quickplay and other functions.
Up until early January 07 it was a great piece of engineering. It had been working great and only had been getting a little loud because of the fan. Well it started overheating and shutting down intermittently w/o warning. It now does not turn on. Turns out it burned two little ICs near the DVD area. Not sure why this occurred because the fan worked up until the end. In any case I opened it up and that is what I found. The motherboard is toast now.
Now that Ive been looking on the net, it turns out that this is a common occurance, just do a search for "hp dv1000". New the motherboard will run you about $339 - $354. So be careful. If I were you I would do maintenance on the laptop by cleaning the fan of debris and dust. Just be careful opening because its tricky. Also make sure you are grounded (to prevent static buildup).
Im not sure if I should salvage the CPU, HDD, RAM, DVD-R/W, and other components and build my own desktop or if I should buy a used laptop for less than $355 or just buy a new/used motherboard. Anyway, thats my dilemna... you have been informed.
