HOW TO TELL FAKE ANYA HINDMARCH "I'm NOT A Plastic bag" bag!
continued from Part 2
5. The letters on the front of the bag spelling out “I’m NOT A Plastic bag” on some fakes are too thick. This is relatively easy to spot if you do a side by side comparison.
6. The “we are what we do” printed on one of the inside flaps of the bag has to be a certain FONT and SIZE. This is unequivocal as this is the official logo of the organization “we are what we do”. The font is called, after much research, Helvetica Neue Std Bold. Some fakes use a completely different font which is very easy to tell. Some use a similar font, but where the down stroke of the letter “d” is too long. Some use an even more similar font, but you can still tell by the letters “a” missing small tails.
These types of fakes are all over ebay right now, in all colors. Beware! Some may question if I can be wrong, if some of the bags can be printed with the "taller" d. I'm afraid the answer is NO. This is NOT up to interpretation, as this is the official LOGO of the "we are what we do" organization. It can be seen and downloaded at the official website (I can't provide an external link in the ebay guide, just do a google search). To proof my point, I did some research. I downloaded a file called "lesson-plan.pdf" from the download section. Opened the file in Acrobat Reader, and under File--Properties--Fonts, I found a lists of fonts. I checked the list of fonts at adobe type browser and found that the font used is called Helvetica Neue Std Bold. Since I can't provide any external link, you can message me and I can show you the link to the font on Adobe's website. Can it be possible that the bags are printed NOT using the font specified by the official logo? NO! Because if you go to the we are what we do website, they'll tell you that there are GUIDELINES on how their artwork can be used, and cannot be altered.
7. Some fakes have the dot in the letter “i” in “Plastic” connected to the long stroke of the “i”. The people who made these fakes were probably just trying to save some work. On the authentic ones, the dot is a SEPARATE, DISTINCT piece stitched above but NOT CONNECTED. It’s possible that on some authentic bags the dot is stitched very close as to be actually touching, you’ll need to get a really close-up picture to be able to tell.
8. The newer, better fakes are getting very close to the real thing. These you really have to look close and know what you’re looking for in order to tell.
One has the right side of the loop in the letter “L” in “Plastic” THICKER than the left side, where on the authentic ones the right side of the loop is slightly THINNER.
Another new better fake has a ROUNDED top in the letter “A”. On the authentic ones, the top of the letter “A” should be slightly flat.
Below is what it SHOULD look like:
9. Do not let the inclusion of tags or receipts (copies or even original) lead you to determine whether a bag is real or fake. This might have been a decent indicator a while ago, but is no longer the case. There are people offering fake tags for sale, even fake receipts for sale. And I can only imaging making fake tags or receipts must be a LOT easier than making fake bags!
Some people question whether some of the fakes I point out could be real, could be discrepancies in manufacturing. I have to say I usually give the item the benefit of the doubt. However, several things are given:
1. The printings on the inside of the flaps can't be of the wrong font, or wrong size, that's OBVIOUS.
2. The letters on the front of the bag that spell out " I'm NOT A Plastic bag" is very telltale, because they are CUT from a DIE, so the basic shape, thickness can't vary that much, otherwise Anya Hindmarch wouldn't have selected the factory to do them. Of course, the location of each piece of cloth can vary to a degree, but not the shape of the teardrop appostrophe, the letter "I", etc.
