Here are a few more things to watch out for to avoid buying fake or imported DVDs on ebat (these are not as common which is why I did not include them in PART 1).
PRIVATE FEEDBACK
There is almost ALWAYS a reason why a seller decided to hide his feedback - be VERY careful when buying DVDs from anyone with a hidden feedback score! Usually it means they do not want anyone to read what others commented (for example if they did sell imported DVDs and someone gave them negative saying "NONE OF THE DVDS WORKED! F- SELLER" - they'd easily lose a lot of business if anyone read that - hence the hidden feedback!
ZERO (OR LOW) FEEDBACK
Often when a seller gets too many negative feedbacks for selling copied or imported DVDs, they will simply start a new account on ebay and start selling again hoping to get a few ebayers who think they are getting a great deal simply because the seller has a low feedback score - rather then getting a great deal because the seller is selling imported dvds!
AUCTION WITH MANY BIDS (THESE ARE REALLY TRICKY ONES!)
Sellers know that they can attract interest in their items by increasing the number of bids on their items; if a buying saw two similar items on ebay, one with 20 bids and another with 0 bids, the buyer will be more interested in the one with 20 bids more often then not. Some sellers actually start numerous accounts and BID ON THEIR OWN auctions! They can have many accounts outbid each other to increase the number of bids on the item and increase the auction's price. The rationalism is that if many others feel safe bidding on their items, you should too! Then they just need one person to fall for it and outbid all of the seller's other usernames and it's payday for the seller! The best way to look out for this is to simply look at the feedback of the users that are making those bids - since those additional account rarely if ever win auctions, their feedback will be low or 0 - and often are new accounts created in the last 30 days!
BID RETRACTION
This is what happens when a seller gets too greedy or makes a mistake and bids his own item up too high. If the seller actually outbids everyone on his own item in an attempt to increase the value of an auction, he can retract the most recent bid - therefore the second highest bidder will again become the winning bidder.
There is one additional variation of this scam....the seller purposely outbids the high bidder (with some crazy bid - such as $1000) - then he will cancel that bid and for the reason he will say "bidder bid $1000 instead of $100" - and here is where they get you:
By outbidding you they can figure out your EXACT BID! So if the auction was at only $20, but you had already bid $50, then after retracting the bid, the seller will rebid with a different account - he will bid $49 which means your current bid will be raised to $50 - the max you were willing to pay!
Above are the more rare scams, but these apply to MUCH MORE then just DVD auctions! Watch out and keep safe!
