How to Select a Portable Generator?
What Types of Generators are Available?
When choosing a generator, it is important to identify you needs so you can select the model that best accommodate those needs. Determining how you plan to use the generator will help you choose the correct unt.
GENERATORS FALL INTO FOUR CATEGORIES:
Premium, Premium Plus, Professional and Back-Up Power (Home Standby).
PREMIUM- Recreational users with active lifestyles. Their recreational activities, such as boating and camping, require small-sized, lightweight, easy-to carry units that are quiet running.
PREMIUM PLUS - Serious do-it-yourselfers requiring frequent usage. These people need a generator that is portable and powerful. From the storage shed to the front pouch, thier generators are always on the move. These generators are perfect for customers looking for a basic, economically-priced unit.
PROFESSIONAL- Contractors and commercial tradesmen demand that this generator works as long and as hard as they do. Durability and reliability are essential. They want a generator that can carry them through an entire workday. Day after day. these generators are full-featured and have many "extras" that make them our top-of-the line.
BACK-UP POWER SYSTEMS OR HOME STANDBY - Customers who need a generator to run items in thier home during a power outage. They need generators that run for extended periods of time and have enough power to meet their needs. These generators are also a good value providing more watts per dollar.
KEY GENERATOR FEATURES
ENGINE TYPE:
Generators utilize overhead valve engines (OHV) or side valve engines. The design of the OHV engine lends itself to greater arirflow around the engine, and the combustion chamber producees a more even fuel burn for increased efficiency (23% more efficient than a side valve engine). They also come with cast-irom cylinder sleeves that contribute to a longer life. All this causes the OHV engine to run cooler, with lower exhaust emissions, and longer liffe. Consequently models with OHV engines will cost more that side valve models. We recommend the ProGen, Vertix or fIndustrial units when long life and quiter operation are important.
Some customers will use their generators infrequently, or when they do use them, run them for shorter periods. For these people, models with side vale engines offer excellent value. We recommend the Pulse, Ultra, Powerbase or Maxa units to the value conscious consumer.
