one-half percent for every 1 PSI drop in pressure on tires. And
correctly inflated tires not only last longer and need replacement less
often but also are much safer for both drivers and passengers. All four Car or Truck Tires should be checked weekly to ensure proper inflation and tire tread wear. Also be sure to inspect each of your vehicle's tires thoroughlyfor any loose road debris or nails that are stuck or partially punctured tires; even if your tire seems inflated, nails are both dangerous and can cause slow leaks to down your Gas Mileage.

driving accelerations will actually decrease your Gas and fuel. Another Gas killer-driving at high
rates of speed or simply speeding in general. You'll Lose Big Gas Mileage-an average of at least 5 percent Gas Loss around town but huge
losses of an average of 33 percent at highway or freeway speeds. So if you're serious about Improving Your Gas Mileage and actually Saving Gas, consider slowing it down just a bit. You'll see huge improvements in Car also by simply maintaining more stable speeds on the freeways and in town. Keep it at 65 whenever possible, avoiding braking or speeding. And
pay heed to not revving your engine at stoplights, which causes
additional Gas Loss and Decreased Gas Mileage. Gas Mileage is also negatively
affected by a minimum of 5% gas loss up to 33% gas loss with frequent fast braking and rapid accelerations.
GAS MILEAGE PRICE IMPROVEMENT: YOU'LL SAVE APPROX $0.25-$1.65 PER GALLON OF GAS SAVINGS (BASED ON CURRENT AVERAGE GAS PRICE COSTS)
#9 HOW TO MAXIMIZE THE SPEED LIMIT-IT SAVES LIVES, AND SAVES YOU SERIOUS CASH IN GAS:
Aside from general safety and accident avoidance, cars, trucks and vehicle reach optimal gas or fuel economy at a certain speed or range of speeds. Gas mileage, or Miles per Gallon saved, tend to decrease rapidly and significantly at speeds over 60 mph for all vehicles. Gas Mileage is negatively affected by a minimum of 7% gas loss up to 23% gas loss. For every increased Mile per Hour above 60 MPH, expect to pay at least $0.35 cents more per gallon of wasted gas.
GAS MILEAGE PRICE IMPROVEMENT: YOU'LL SAVE APPROX $0.35-$1.15 PER GALLON OF GAS SAVINGS (BASED ON CURRENT AVERAGE GAS PRICE COSTS)
#10 CONTROL YOUR CRUISING AND MINIMIZE WASTE-HOW TO SET YOUR SPEED FOR HUGE GAS BILL SAVINGS:
If you've got it, use it. Not only can Cruise Control Settings be far more relaxing when driving, it also Saves Big Money on your Gas Bill. GAS MILEAGE PRICE IMPROVEMENT: YOU'LL SAVE APPROX $0.35-$1.15 PER GALLON OF GAS SAVINGS (BASED ON CURRENT AVERAGE GAS PRICE COSTS)
#11 THERE IS A TIME TO GO INTO OVERDRIVE-HOW TO USE YOUR GEARS TO MAXIMIZE GAS BILL CASH SAVINGS:
Use Overdrive gears to slow your car or truck down, whenever possible. Frequent braking wastes more gas while instead utilizing Overdrive effectively slows your vehicle, while significantly also reducing Engine Wear.
#12 DOWNSIZE YOUR CAR'S CLOSET-HOW IT PAYS TO INCREASE YOUR GAS MILEAGE THROUGH LOSING BIG LBS:
How important is that set of Golf Clubs you store in the trunk during the rainy season? If you have unnecessary items in your car, truck or vehicle, then you may want to seriously consider a storage space instead of your car's trunk. Extra items, particularly those heavier in weight, can cost you Big Money in Gas Loss and Decreased Gas Mileage. And all those pounds can add up-remember, five 20-lb items do add up to one 100-lb weight set. An additional 100 pounds in your vehicle reduces your Gas Mileage per Gallon (MPG) by approximately 2%. It's all relative-at least to your car's weight; smaller vehicles or standard sized cars or trucks are more significantly affected by extra weight than larger.
GAS MILEAGE PRICE IMPROVEMENT: YOU'LL SAVE APPROX $0.10 PER GALLON OF GAS SAVINGS (BASED ON CURRENT AVERAGE GAS PRICE COSTS)
#13 HOW TO AVOID
BEING IDLE-IT'S BAD FOR THE MIND AND BAD FOR GAS CASH:
Idling receives 0 miles per gallon, translated to absolutely no bang for your
buck. Cars or trucks with bigger and more powerful engines usually
waste more gas at idle than cars that have smaller engines. If you're waiting 15 minutes for a friend's arrival, you'll want to turn off your engine. Idling can waste an average of one quart of Gas Loss per 15 minutes. Most cars and vehicles do not need to be 'warmed up' unless they are older and/or in more extreme temperature climates. So save your gas for the important stuff, like driving.
#14 BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER-HOW TO COME TO TERMS WITH THE FACT THAT SIZE DOES MATTER:
Many of us may love our SUVs, Hummers and the like. And of course throw in the Luxury Sedans and Cadi or two, with an extra-long family Van to boot. Spacious and roomy, with all the latest gadgets, how could we ever live without them? Though this may be the obvious, some drivers simply don't think about it: bigger cars or trucks, not just SUVs, have more powerful Engines necessary for driving and simply waste more Gas-and your Mileage is going to suffer. Depending on your car or vehicle size, your Car's Gas Mileage may seriously suffer while your losing Gas with every extra pound and rev of the that snazzy Engine. Smaller and lighter weight trucks run far more efficiently and use Less Gas than larger or Luxury Sized Cars. Aside from the car's physical exterior, larger cars and bigger trucks often require much stronger and more powerful engines for driving-such as V6 or V8s. The result: you're receiving far less Miles per Gallon of Gas Usage; where many current cars and trucks may get 17 miles to the gallon, more economical sized vehicles obtain more than 30 miles per gallon of Gas Economy, saving you Big Money on Gas Bills and Gas Station Fill-Ups at the Pump. So consider your options: if you really Want to Improve Your Gas Mileage, consider downsizing to a car or truck that meets your needs but is slightly smaller in size or has a smaller Engine.
#15 IT PAYS TO SHARE-ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN SAVE BY SPLITTING GAS BILLS:
Share rides with co-workers and friends whenever possible. Not only will it add the advantage of utilizing Car Pool lanes, to get you to your destination quicker, your car or truck will Save Big on regular drivetime Wear and Tear-and Save Big on your Gas Bill. Splitting Gas Costs in at least half is a huge savings with virtually no investment.
#16 COMMUTE DURING NON-PEAK OR LESS BUSY HOURS:
Aside from cutting your frustration significantly, you can Cut Your Gas Bill and Save Big Money by traveling or commuting during non-peak or reduced-traffic hours; life isn't perfect, and is usually not traffic-free, so don't strive for perfection; even if you alter your workday by an hour, for less rush-hour traffic surroundings, you'll burn far less fuel by accelerating and braking less and idling less in consistently (or even better-moving) traffic.
#17 TRAVEL LESS, WORK MORE:
You can actually get more out of your workday, in less hours, if you can arrange to work even part of the day from home. Even if those work hours at home mean that you're simply staggering your schedule to commute at different hours, it can be well worth it in Gas Savings. But even better, talk with your employer and find out whether there's any possibility of working from home on certain days-you may well find that you can be more productive in less overall hours, once you remove all the extra hours of wasted gas and drivetime headache. With Inflated and Rising Gas Prices today, you may be able to save yourself a significant chunk of cash out of every paycheck-simply by cutting your daily Gas Bill to work and home.
#18 PACKRATS, PACK LESS-IF YOU'RE WORTH YOUR WEIGHT IN GOLD, GAS BILLS WILL SKYROCKET:
Annual or semi-annual road trips, or special events or family vacations by road, may seem a lot less expensive than traveling by plane or train--and certainly can be. But be careful-many drivers don't consider the additional weight of luggage, equipment or other add-on 'necessities' tied to their rooftops. Rooftop luggage carriers can be an incredible invention when utilized wisely, but pay close attention when packing: all that extra weight adds up to more gas. And Gas Efficiency is cut even further with physically larger items that cause drag and reduce aerodynamics, causing your car to work harder and burn more Gas in the process. Utilize your car's trunk whenever possible, particularly for bulky or odd-shaped items that cut aerodynamics. And consider packing lighter whenever possible. If it's going to cost you more to transport than to stay at a hotel, you'll want to reconsider the item.
#19 PUT YOUR HARD-EARNED CASH TO WORK AT THE PUMP-IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A CRISIS TO PAY CASH AND PAY LESS FOR GAS:
Many Gas Stations are now promoting a Cash Price for Gas Rates, in efforts to cut business costs associated with merchant accounts for credit card acceptance. Because many Credit Card companies charge a merchant fee to businesses that typically ranges between 2-4% or even more, those merchant costs can add up quickly on every transaction a Gas Station processes. On the flip side, News agencies and Investigative Reporting have uncovered ripoff scams that many Gas Stations have recently been guilty of performing-essentially a Bait and Switch Scam technique that has been utilized by even major chain brand names of stations; Gas Station Prices prominently advertised on the main corner signs have been used to lure customers to the pump, where receipts after credit card purchases then show higher Gas Prices that can be 10-cents or higher per gallon than the signs indicated. The response by Gas Stations has been that the gas pricing shown on their signs is actually a Cash Price Rate for gas, though those stations have not been properly indicating this to consumers. Not all Gas Stations have responded unethically to the Gas Crisis and increased high prices: advertised rates at the majority of stations are true pricing, and many stations offer an additional Cash Price discount. Customers in the know, however, can use the new Gas Station Cash Prices to their advantage-if you're able to pay for your gas fill-ups without using a credit card as your payment method, and plan in advance for an ATM stop, you can save a good chunk of change per gallon at the Gas Station Pumps.
#20 THE PREMIUM GAS MYTH-YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY FOR WHAT YOU DON'T NEED
Gas companies and the oil industry would have you believe your car or truck needs the highest grade of gas to get decent mileage- and has done a great job of marketing this idea. But don't pay for what you don't need: if you have a newer car or vehicle, don't have a high-performance engine that requires it, aren't hearing pinging or knocking, and your manufacturer's specifications for your car or truck don't list it in your manual, then you don't need Premium Gasoline. You'll pay a lot more for Premium Gas and, although some cars and vehicles such as those with high-performance engines or older vehicles with larger V8 engines may require it, Premium Gas is not a necessity for most cars. Particularly newer and smaller vehicles do not require Premium Gas, gas which can inflate your Gas Bill significantly. So check your specs and manual, or check with your mechanic if unsure, but be aware that you may not need the Premium Gas you thought was a necessity.
#22 COMBINE TRIPS-IF YOU'RE GEOGRAPHICALLY CHALLENGED, MAKE MAPQUEST YOUR FRIEND:
It may not seem like a big deal, because you're just going 'around town,' but if you can combine trips whenever possible you'll see Big Gas Savings. Three stops? Create a circle that makes the most sense. You'd be surprised how a 'mile or two out of the way' can really add up when all those miles are added together. And one of the biggest gas pitfalls: the 'around-town' city streets, with frequent braking, acceleration and stop-signs galore that all add up to eaten-away Gas Mileage. For the Best Gas Mileage, create a loop that makes sense geographically-it will save you time, and save you Gas Money.
#23 THE LIMIT'S THE LIMIT-DON'T TOP OFF YOUR GAS, ONLY TO SEE YOUR GAS MONEY TANK:
It seems like such a great idea to Top Off your Gas Tank-one less frequent stop for Gas, etc. But avoid the urge-the automatic shut-off on the gas pump is there for a reason: Gas expands when heated, which translates to Gas Expands once you've started your Engine and begin driving. The problem with Gas top-offs is that you never know just how much you're topping off the gas, which makes it a game of hit or miss. Top off your gas tank, and you're likely to overflow with the gas expansion, and simply waste the gas you've just purchased.
#24 STOP LIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS-EASY DOES IT FOR GREAT GAS SAVINGS:
We've talked about maintaining constant or consistent speeds whenever possible, both on the highway and in the city, while driving. But what about stop signs and stop lights? At stop lights and stop signs, most of us are impatient and ready to go-but be careful because fast accelerations from a dead stop can be a big Gas Waster. Accelerate gently and smoothly from any stop, avoiding sudden or fast accelerations.
#25 WATCH TRAFFIC PATTERNS-KEEP YOUR DISTANCE FROM THE 'POKY PUPPY':
Watch traffic patterns ahead of you, from a distance, whenever possible and learn to anticipate cars and vehicles that have a tendency to slam on their brakes frequently-or those that simply have the tendency to be moving at 45 while general traffic is moving at 65. One of the biggest Gas Wasters is moving back to a regular highway or freeway speed, after being forced to slam on brakes or have your car at a near stop. While it's one thing to be cognizant of maintaining a constant or consistent stop, it's entirely different to learn to have the awareness of anticipating those 'trouble spots' in traffic (or the dawdling 'Poky Puppy'-and here we must give credit to Little Golden Books and that amazing author Janette Sebring Lowrey, whom must have had intimate knowledge of infamous freeways such as the CA 405 when creating this famous work) that can force you to slow down quickly if you're not being aware of others on the road. Remember that it requires an average of approximately 20% More Gas to accelerate back to regular speed from a near full stop than it does from about 5 miles per hour. Watch traffic ahead of, and around you, to avoid getting stuck in pockets where you may be forced to slow down rapidly and then speed up to pass-this wastes gas, has no benefit and provides terrible Gas Mileage.
