Many of you have written and asked me how do I make a quilt and how many squares do I need for a certain size.
I cannot basically tell you how many squares you might need. There are alot of variables invovled in determining the size and number of squares. First of all, do you want sashing or strips in between your squares and rows and if so, how wide do you want them. No. 2 do you want a border around it and if so, how wide do you want that. No. 3 do you want it dropping to a dust ruffle or to the floor. No. 4 do you want it to cover the pillows or just to tuck underneath your pillows. No. 5 the width of your mattress. Some mattresses are kind of flat and others have pillow tops on them.
All these factors determine the amount of squares you might need. You may want to space them out in such a way as to only use a few of them with the sashings and borders doing the bulk of the work.
If you want to just sew squares together, measure from where you want your quilt to drape (end to end) and then measure top to bottom (under or over pillow and at the bottom how far of a drop). Add those two together and divide by 5-1/2 if using 6" squares or 4-1/2 if using 5" squares. You will have 1/4" seam all around so you will end up with your 1/2". That should tell you how many squares you will need. The bigger the bed, the more squares.
I am going to give you some measurements that might help you in converting things.
