HONEYSUCKLE  CARE SHEET
For bare root Plants

Honeysuckle is easy to love and easy to grow if given even half a chance.   A good start is the most important part, so read on…

Unpack your plants quickly upon arrival and stick the roots down in water for a couple of hours or overnight to rehydrate them.  Some leaf wilt is normal and no cause for alarm. Most of the time they will perk back up after rehydration. If not, just snip the dead leaves off with scissors, they will be back before you know it.  Prepare your  planting site in the meantime according to instructions below.

Soil:

I recommend MiracleGrow  potting soil with fertilizer ( it just seems to work better than other brands). If planting outside you can work some of this into the soil.  Keep pots in shade for 2 or 3 days then move into full sunlight for blooms.

Outside you can work a  little potting soil or  fine compost into whatever soil you have as long as it well drained.  Honeysuckle likes slightly acid soil and thrives on a clay bank. You can give the plants a top dressing of compost too if you like.  Plant the roots as deep as they were before (you will be able to tell).

Sun:

Tolerates partial shade but blooms best in full sun.  Wherever the sun touches the main stalk it will put out runners, so remember this when you are arranging it.  It can become invasive so keep this in mind when choosing a spot.

Water:

KEEP MOIST after planting new plants.  This is the single most important factor in getting the vine to grow.  I recommend using a drip hose for at least the first two weeks. You should see new growth by then and you can cut back on the water.  Drought tolerant when established.

Tolerance:

Zones 4-9.  Has the best chance of surviving the northern winters when planted against shelter, such as the wall of a house, and covered well with leaf mulch and hay in winter.

Best planted April -June and September-December  according to your zone.

ENJOY !   And feel free to contact me at any time.
