HOW TO BID ON eBay - Win Movie posters, lobby cards though last second bid snipes

This guide has been compiled by John Reid Original Movie Posters

The best piece of advice I can give you is to use a sniping program. Search the internet and chose from one of the many that offer this service. Some are free and others charge but they are worth the money. I won't specifically recommend any particular program but do some research and you should come up with the right program.

Sniping is placing a bid through a third party in the last seconds of an auction. Some people frown on this as being unethical in some way but the reality is that you can bid at any time on an eBay auction and sniping is perfectly legal and the most logical way to place a bid. Many of the high volume buyers on eBay use sniping programs. The advantages of sniping are:

  • You set your bid with a third party and leave the bidding to them.
  • You dont have to be near a computer when the auction is about to end. This is particularly useful when the auction is in another country and ends at an uncivilised hour when you should be asleep.
  • Your interest in the item and intention to bid is not visible to anyone until the last seconds of the auction.
  • You dont get carried away with the hype of a bidding war. You simply set your limit and forget about it.
  • When you bid in the last seconds no one has the chance to respond or think of going higher.

There are some disadvantages:

  • There are occasions when system changes can result in the sniping program being unable to place the bid. This rarely occurrs but if you absolutely must have the item then it is best to bid in the normal way.

You can usually edit your bid during the auction through the sniping program but no one can see this through eBay. You can watch other bidders and react through the sniping program. The program will raise the bid enough to beat the highest bidder within your limit. In many cases winning snipes are well below what the bidder was prepared to bid.

You should also consider making your feedback private so that your competitors cannot see what you have been bidding on.

Good luck with your bidding!
