Don't be afraid to use language in your contract that protects you. When researching we saw that things we never even thought of were in the contracts. We took that to mean that sellers had happened upon circumstances that they needed to protect themselves from. We have included a copy of our online auction contract at the end of this guide.(We also have a similar but seperate contract for items that are placed in our eBay store). Please keep in mind that you may need to add or take away anything that does not fit in with your selling style.
Do not hide anything and do not exaggerate your expertise. If you are not familiar with an item, do the research. Always give a free appraisal based on previous items sold on eBay not "book prices or collector guides". Also if a client does not feel secure with a low starting price even after being presented with an estimate of sale, don't push them. We advise all our clients that we cannot guarantee that an item will sell at a certain price. We also tell them that if they have a certain minimum dollar amount that they would like to get, to not list their item with us as we wouldn't want them to be dissappointed. You will be surprised that instead of losing business we have actually had many repeat customers because they know we're not going to lead them down the wrong path just to make a sale.
Have fun! The biggest reward besides the money we make is the variety of people we meet. Everybody has a story and the items they are selling often mean something to them. Give your clients your time. Return their phone calls promptly and follow up during and after their sale. We allow our clients to drop in to view their auctions if they don't have access to a computer. If they have a computer but don't know how to navigate eBay, take the time to show them how to access the auctions you have listed for them. Also, at the end of auction we provide our clients with an eBay listing confirmation page and an end of auction page so they have a hard copy of the sale. We also have a website that we can refer them to so they can view the contracts with a link provided to bring them directly to our eBay store. People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing. Be an open book.
