300 SPARTANS ACTUALLY WORE MOHAWKS!

 A quick look at the 300 Spartans history reveals that ALL of the Spartan Soldiers wore the plume (mohawk) on their helmets, not just King Leonidis. Frank Miller, the graphic novelist for the book 300, says that he took the liberty of only having King Leonidis wear the mohawk to make him stand out as King from his soldiers. "Plumes" were the red bands of horse hair worn on top of their helmets. The mohawks function was to make the warrior appear taller and more intimidating while giving him a royal like appearance.
