Aloha... did you know that all sea turtles in the same nest are the same sex??? That's right! the temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchling turtles! The warmer nests produce females, while cooler nests bring little boy turtles into the world. While most Hawaiians today refer to all turtles as "honu's", only the Pacific Green Sea turtle (which is native to Hawaii, by the way) was called a honu by the ancient Hawaiians. The Pacific Hawksbill Sea turtle was actually called an "ea" or honu'ea". In ancient Hawaiian culture, the honu is included in the fourth verse of the Hawaiian Creation Chant or Kumulipo, as well as in petroglyphs, and legends as helpers and demigods, and heroes. There is even a Hula Honu...a traditional Hawaiian dance that honors the Honu Amakua or Family god. While ancient Hawaiians had strict hunting laws regarding the Honu, modern times nearly dessimated the species. Laws passed in 1978 (When they were listed as threatened under the endangered species act.) prohibiting the harvesting of these beautiful creatures have helped to restore the population of the near extinct species And today you can see them in the surf at most of the beaches around the islands. I like to sit on the beach and watch them coming up for air while they feed on the reefs just below the surface of the water. Turtles are still a favorite in Hawaii today, and the affection for our green sea friends is evident in the souvenirs available to visitors here.
