During the Great Depression in the United States the mainstream realist and anti-modernist style of painting became popular. It was an attempt to define a uniquely American style of art, a reaction against the European modernism.
These artists documented American cities and landscapes with a richness never seen before; some did so as a way to return to a simpler time, others made a political statement supporting revolutionary and radical causes.
