Over the last couple of years, I have bought a ton of books on the subject of developing strong abdominals and almost all of them have focused on either selling their whole body training regiment or a promise for a chiseled midsection. Most of what these books ask is quite stringent and unrealistic since people are unable to dedicate the time required due to life situations such as work, rest, and family time.

So, the question is, are there actually books out there that really do only focus on the abdominals?  The answer is yes!  The books which stand out and found to be the most helpful: 3-Minute Abs by Kurt Brungardt and Stronger Abs and Back by Dean and Greg Brittenham.  The beauty of the Brungardt book is that it is broken down into a realistic regiment of 10 exercises over the course of 3 days (the fourth day designated as the rest day).  In undergoing these exercises, I suggest that you initially work on your own pace with a maximum of 21 repetitions and 2 sets for each exercise.  Another thing going for Brungardt's exercises is that it doesn't require the use of any expensive weight training equipment.

As for Dean and Greg Brittenham, they have had a lot of experience in the field of weight training having handled professional teams such as the New York Knicks and even Olympic athletes who participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.  In their book, Stronger Abs and Back, the authors understand the importance of developing the core (or midsection) in order to develop not only a great set of abs but also total body power, power, speed, quickness, agility, and coordination (Brittenham & Brittenham, 1997).  The book also has a number of exercises which can add variety the the aformentioned Brungardt workout as well put emphasis on the effectiveness of using basic exercise equipment such as a Swiss ball and medicine ball in your abdominal training.

These books may be available on ebay, so what are you waiting for?  Set your foundation and start building your healthy lifestyle today!
