Navigating the Charity Maze
Many want to give, but get caught up in the fine details of choosing the right Charity organization. Before selecting a charity, read below. By using this guide, you will be one step closer to choosing the right charity for you.
(1) Check the Charity organization's designation:
- Does it have a 501(c)(3) classification? - This means that the IRS recognizes the organization as a qualified charitable entity that can receive tax-deductible donations.
- You can check on an organizations status with the IRS, by visiting the IRS' website.
(2) See how the Organization will use your donation:
- They should provide this information free of charge when asked.
- Visit the organizations website, or pamphlets for this information.
- To find out how an organization spends their money visit google:
- Give
- Charity Navigator, and
- Charity Watch
(3) What is the organization's mission?
- Do you agree with the organizations mission and iniatiatives?
- Review the organization's annual report - a breakdown of how they have spent their money in the past.
- How much money goes to the cause vs. administrative staff and marketing?
- Acroding to Charity Navigator, a charity watchdog group, if an organization spends less than 75% of its funds on the cause, walk away.
(4) Ask Questions:
- Do they have relationships established with other community-based organizations?
- Is there an infanstructure in place?
- Are they strong enough to turn your dollars into helpful services?
(5) Always check on the organization's fiances through the IRS.
- Get a copy of the most recently filed IRS From 990.
