When you embellish clothing, make hairbows, dog collars, belts, etc. it requires the use of non-wired ribbons, but you can still buy wired ribbon as more wires can be easily removed.  It depends on the gauge, space and straightness but I have been able to remove the wire from 95% of ribbons, so most of the time it should not be a problem.

Tips:

  • Needle nose pliers are helpful, but not required.
  • It is easier to have someone help you by holding the other end of the ribbon.
  • If you don't have someone to hold the other end of the ribbon for you, just epose the wire and wrap it around something sturdy (i.e. door frame hinge), and straighten out the ribbon by standing across the room and pulling gently.
  • The shorter the ribbon, the easier it is to remove the wire.  If you have several yards of ribbon and plan to cut it in one yard lengths (for example) to use on your craft, it will be easier on you to remove the wire after you cut the ribbon to the desired length.

Step by Step Guide to Removing the Wire:

  1. Push the ribbon fabric back a bit to expose the wire.
  2. Using your fingers or needle nose pliers, grab hold of it securely.
  3. Either get another person to hold the other end of the ribbon taut (have them stand on the other side of the room or down the hall depending how long a piece you have) or secure it to something sturdy.
  4. If you've got someone helping you, have them hold the fabric tight, and you should be able to slide the wire riht out.  Otherwise, expose the wire on one end and secire it, then gently slide the fabric off the wire.  If it is a thin, spindly wire it may break, but most are not.  It's important to pull it out slowly to ensure the wire stays in one piece.
  5. Do the same for the other wire on the opposite side.
