Hello and thank you for reading this guide. My name is Mark , owner of My-retro-Electronics, and I primarilly deal with movie projectors.
This guide is designed to help those who need a new projector or buying their first one.
If you currently own a Kodak Carousel Slide Projector and are looking for another one , my bet is yours no longer advances or reverses. Either that or the auto/remote focus no longer works. This is due to the advance link and focus gears literally rot. This is normal due to them being 18-40 years old. If you are very handy and patient you can repair it yourself. Their is a gentleman on Ebay who sells the rebiuld kits for them. Keep in mind the repair can take up a Saturday, cause blood loss and extreme irritablity.
Kodak as of Sept 2004 no longer manufactures slide projectors ending a great legacy.
CAROUSELS
I have found many people are unsure if their old carousel will fit on a different projector. The Carousels are UNIVERSAL TO ALL KODAK CAROUSEL AND ECTAGRAPHIC PROJECTORS, with the exception of the 550 , 550R, 570, AV580, RA-950 CAROUSEL S, POCKET AND RA-960. The previously listed models were/are rare units and you are unlikely to have one.
Carousel Projectors vs the Ektagraphic Projectors
The Carousel Projector was a consumer projector and the Ektagraphic was a professional model. The Ektagraphic was originally quite a bit more expensive than the Carousel models. Now on Ebay they are far cheaper to purchase than a Carousel because many people are unaware of them. Here are some advantages of a Ektagraphic:
The advantages of the Ektagraphics are:
- Extra heat dissapation for brighter bulbs
- Light is more even , esp corners
- Tighter registration - Slides show up at the same place on the screen
- Autofocus can be switched off
Disadvantage : Fan is louder
PREFFERED UNITS 4000 series and above
The older slide projectors listed further down probably (most likely) have bad gears. Save yourself the hassle of puchasing one unless it has been rebuilt. The 4000 series and above will accept your slide carousels from NEARLY ALL PREVIOUS slide projectors Kdak biult. These units will last you nearly forever and there gears do not rot.
Deciphering a Carousel model number (not the 4800,4600 or similar) 850h etc
The MOST IMPORTANT CODE "H" . This is the most important thing to look for when purchasing a Carousel Projector. The reason I state this is cost and slide longevity. The "H" means it is a "Halogen" bulb. The halogen is brighter, cooler (saving your slides from excess heat) and far cheaper to replace than the normal filimant bulb. The replacement cost for a "H" is around $4.00 (100hr bulb) or for a filimant bulb $25.00 (25 hr bulb).
600 (H)series
Manual advance only , no remote . The simplist projector made but extremely reliable as it is the only one that does not have the advance link installed.

750 (H) Series

800 (H) Series
One of the most desirable . Remote Forward/Reverse/ Remote Focus

800 Custom Series
Remote Focus Forward/Reverse
High/Low Lamp Settings. VERY HARD TO REPAIR
850 (H) Series
Remote Forward/Reverse AUTOFOCUS , Autoamatic timer as described above.
860 (H) Series
Autofucus, Remote Forward/Reverse, Automatic Timer Lamp High/Low
Please keep in mind that if the seller has not tested the unit with slides or professionally serviced it it probably does not work correctly. Myself and a small handfull of other sellers here on Ebay do service these units prior to selling them. Make sure you get a warranty on them should you buy one as a local repair of these average $180.00. I do not offer repair services for these as I rebuild them at my leasure but the service is (or was) available through other sellers.
