Guide To Dining Room Furniture
Selecting the right dining room furniture is completely dependent upon what you want it to do for you. If you like a modern look, then lacquer, chrome, and glass in sleek Italian lines will suit you well. If you wish to create a rich and lush environment, dark woods and richly upholstered seats may be more appropriate.
However, unless you shop with comfort in mind, your dining room furniture--no matter what style you choose--will be no more enjoyable than a display in a museum. Long stories over dessert can't take place when guests are longing to get out of an uncomfortable chair. Friends won't savor the meal or the conversation if the edges of the table are uncomfortable, or the ratio of chair to table height is off.
When choosing your dining room furniture, pay close attention to the details: dining chair heights vs. the bottom edge of the table, the roundness or smoothness of the table's edge, the seat backs, the seat bottoms, etc. A good wooden chair can be very comfortable, if it is built with the human body in mind.
Another thing to look for are leaves that allow for a table to grow with the number of guests. Drop-leaf tables are very practical, as are leaves that can be stored until its time to set the table. These are particularly smart for apartment dwellers who may want to be able to ultimately accommodate eight for dinner, but don't want to live with a full-time, full-size table.
