General Facts Your Should know when get a Commissioned Artist
1. Will the artist draw sex or sexual situtaions?
You should really find out first if that is your request. Most artist do not. For one reason: One person meaning of sex is different that other. While some think of it as an romanic thing. Other believe it should be full of violents and hitting women. And to a lot of people that is insulting. And most real artist won't do it. But the ones that do isn't really worth the the time. I see the ads a lot posted anything goes. And the any thing goes isn't usually pretty and neither is the art. WOmen (or men) getting beat while some one is having sex with them isn't pretty.
2.Will you draw one of my own charaters? And do you own the rights?
Yea, most artist will. That's how they make their money. Do you own the rights? Yes again. But before you give an orginal idea out about your charater you should have it copywrited. And not the poor man copyright, that will not hold up in a court of law.
3. I want you to draw character X blah blah. Ever hear of them?
Maybe I have, may be I haven't. It's best to aways give a refrence to any drawing that you are having commission. For a example. I like rogue, but rogue appearance has changed many times over the years. What I might know her as could be complete different from what another person may is use to seeing her as. For example, her old Mutant brotherhood outfit is complete different from her current one.
4. I want you to draw and I have the perfect description for you. It's so good you can see it in your mind. <raise eyebrow> An insanely long description. Bwahahahahaha!!
There is nothing worse than a lone descpriton, especial when it come from someone that has't paid yet. Describing a character is one thing, but describing where they live and hang out nd their favor color is to much. Your job is to give the artist a clear picture of what your charater look llike. Example: One guy gave me this nearly five page sheet to do this charater of s She Venom he wanted done, but all he did for five pages was repeat himself over and over and over and was made because I didn't understanded it. Then he threaten to break the deal off if I didn't understand. ( It's far to late to break any thing off). Many people seem to thing that making a decription as long ass 'War and Piece' is a good thing. Guess what? It's not. Do the artist a favor and keep it simple. What they look like and how tall they are. Fat short, big boobies. Things like that.
5. Will you draw a woman or someone being killed?
I don't minding drawing death or horor pictures. I not to much a fan of seeing women get hurt. Some people seem to be. This is one of the things that you should find out if an artist will do. Fictional death with fictional people is fine. However when people star talking about pictures of real people is going to far. Like the one guy that wanted a picture of this female super star be drowned in a pool. That's abit to much.
6 How long will it take an artist draw the commission averagly?
That's a good question, however that usual depends on the complexity of the drawing. Sometime drawing are easy, but the back ground is the hardest thing to do. Inking takes a lot of time even though most of it is just tracing over what you just drew and adding shadowws. Artist current schedule and how many commission he or she has ahead of hime or her plays a big role to. SOme time it can take months, especial if it is colored. No one like a rush job. If you rush any artist to finish then usually what you get is crap. Commisson art work on ebay and web site isn't a full time job. I'm sure most artist have other jobs and thinks in their live to do. So it is always good to let them take their time and not to annoy them to often. If they have to constantly email you back and show you pictures of your art work to you then thay will never have time to work on it.
Also if your commision is to complex, safe bet is that it will be the last one the artist will work on.
7.Do you less expensive commission?
I try to vary commission size to people off all budgets can afford. But the worse thing is that people seem to jump on the small commission ones and want the word to fit on them. Latey spme people seem to be to cheap to upgrad to a bigger size paper. One person told me once that one piece of paper don't cost ten dollars. Really? Your paying for time and work, not just the paper. The worse thing that a few buyers some time have is a lack of common sense.
It's been over two weeks and I haven't heard anything from you. I see you are still listing items on eBay. I'm going to contact eBay and Paypal, bla bla bla. Are you just taking my money and running?
8. It's a safe bet that the artist is attempting as fast as humanly posibibke. The artist has to continue to list if they still want to make money, they can't just stop listing because one person hired them. Question that follow is that I see you putting up new work on ebay all the time. Once again, the arts is still trying to make money and it is easy for an art to draw pictures that are already laid out and maped in the artist head. Unlike most commisions were people write despritions as long as war nd piece. Some artist are students and work part/full time jobs. When the artist is not working on an ebay piece or busy with college work, he or she is most likly working on the commissions which consume alot of time. The worse delay is when your supplies run ot and you have to run to the store or oder on line to get some more. Or borrow some from work :). The misconception that people seem to get is that the artist hass took of with there money and is partying at 'Hooters'. (If that only was true.) However, it is the safe bet that they are working hard
