UPDATED March 2007: In all the years of the National Basketball Association (NBA) can you name how many players who have worn the jersey #3 and have the said number retired? The answer is, two, Dennis Johnson of the Boston Celtics and the late Drazen Petrovic of the New Jersey Nets. If you are interested in this unique collection, below is a list of all thirty NBA teams and players I feel who best represent #3.
Altanta Hawks - Free-agent signee and former Los Angeles Laker Slava Medvedenko
Boston Celtics - Dennis Johnson, The late "DJ" was a classic defender, who is the first player to have the jersey #3 retired.
Charlotte Bobcats - Not including their days as the Hornets (Rex Chapman), the young Bobcats are well represented with exciting and statistic filled forward Gerald Wallace.
Chicago Bulls - Chicago Free-Agent Signee Ben Wallace takes the position and number of ex-Bull Tyson Chandler.
Cleveland Cavaliers - Aleksandar Pavlovic, a 6'7'' guard-forward drafted by the Utah Jazz and subsequently aquired by the Cavs.
Dallas Mavericks - None, can you believe it?
Denver Nuggets - Currently held by former 76er' Allen Iverson, I think this honor should go to Chris Jackson/Mamoud Abdul-Rauf who despite suffering from the neurological condition--Tourette's syndrome--was able to become one of the most consistent shooters in the NBA.
Detroit Pistons - none since the departure of Ben Wallace
Golden State Warriors - Currently worn by make-shift center, Al Harrington.
Houston Rockets - Bob Sura....But everyone knows that this is Steve Franchises' number :)
Indiana Pacers - Former Warriors Center/Forward Troy Murphy
Los Angeles Clippers - Up and coming rookie Daniel Ewing.
Los Angeles Lakers - Guard Shammond Williams
Memphis Grizzlies - Guard Chucky Atkins
Miami Heat - Dwyane Tyrone Wade, Jr. Two-time NBA All-Star, Winner of the 2005'-06' PS2 Skills Challange.
Milwaukee Bucks - 2006-07 Rookie guard Lynn Greer.
Minnesota Timberwolves - None.
New Jersey Nets - The late Drazen Petrovic who could shoot from anywhere.
New York Knicks - Whenever I see Stephon Marbury wear that jersey, I think of Knicks' favorite John Starks.
New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets - Last year's Rookie of the Year Chris E. Paul.
Orlando Magic - A true representation of the three-ball, former Magic and second all-time in three point shots made in a season (167, broken last year by the Sonics' Ray Allen) Dennis Scott.
Philadelphia 76ers - None. It will probably be retired when Iverson does decide to hang up his Reeboks.
Phoenix Suns - This privilage would go to two players, King Rex (Chapman) for making all of those spectacular three-pointers and currently do-it-all guard/forward/center Boris "Never Nervous" Diaw.
Portland Trailblazers - With the departure of Juan Dixon, no Blazer currently wears #3.
Sacramento Kings - Former Vancouver Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
San Antonio Spurs - Currently none.
Seattle Supersonics - Third all-time in three pointers made, former Sonic Dale Ellis.
Toronto Raptors - Juan Dixon brings his jersey number along to the Raptors.
Utah Jazz - None.
Washington Wizards - Worn by former Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers guard-forward Caron Butler.
