Visit a top-level show and you will be amazed how horses coats will gleam.
The following is a few tricks I have learned over the years to produce that winning look.
Health and Nutrition
Your horses hair coat will reflect the nutrition it may be receiving or not. You need to groom from the inside out. Horses can not grow a shiny coat if it isn't being fed correctly. Make sure your horse is receiving the essential nutrients and also is on a good worming schedule. There are several supplements that may be added to your horses diet to aid in that show ring look.
Elbow Grease
Nothing will replace a good brushing two times per day. Curry, curry, curry then brush, brush, brush.
Several products that I recommend using on a daily basis to keep your horses coat looking it's best is Healthy Hair Care Products. Sunflower Sunscreen and Conditioner, Hair Moisturizer and Coat Gloss.
When you care for your horses coat, pre-show prep is a breeze.
Getting Ready for the Show
Clip your horses bridle path, legs and face.
Bath time! Make sure your horse is clean. Condition the tail.
Spray the horse with Silverado Coat Gloss. This will keep dirt from sticking to your horse, keeping it clean for show day.
I also use the same product on the tail. Keeps it clean and also prevents tangles.
Band the mane.
Keep your horse covered up. I prefer to use a sleezy that covers the body, neck and face. This will also polish the hair coat.
Day of Show
We use World Champion Pepi coat conditioner to bring up the shine in the haircoat, then apply highlighter around the muzzle and eyes.
Hoofs are sanded smooth and cleaned. Fill in nail holes with wood filler to get a smooth surface before you blacken with hoof polish.
Top grooming tip: There are no shortcuts in coat care. It takes time, dedication, and daily work to prepare a horse for show.
