Green Amethyst has become a very popular gem since it was introduced a few years ago. It is a member of the quartz family of gemstones which also includes smoky quartz, rose quartz, citrine, lemon quartz and amethyst which is purple quartz.
It can be produced by heating quartz that contains certain iron compunds. This makes it turn the pale sage green color. Green amethyst also occurs naturally but more often is produced by the manual application of heat.
One reason for its popularity is because it is a very versatile gem and can compliment most outfits. The color is unique and refreshing but can also blend in with a variety of hues and fabrics. It can range in color from a light green to a grass green.
This gemstone is durable and has a hardness ranking of 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it highly suitable for jewelry as its scratch resistance allows for daily wearing of rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets. Also the large crystals that are found make spectacular pieces of jewelry.
Care
Treat your green amethyst jewelry with the same care as you would other precious jewelry. Store it so that it is not in contact with other items. Clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner or with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Keep green amethysts away from extremes in temperature.
If you have questions about the jewelry a gemologist or jeweler can tell you if a stone has been heat treated or if it is synthetic or simulated.
