I've been a manicurist for 15 years and I have extensive product knowledge. I've helped biters grow amazing long fingernails! It is possible!
First, you need the right tools and products. The best nail file, hands down, is the Creative Nail Koala file. It has a coarse side for shaping and a smooth buffer side for sealing edges. Second, is a quality strengthener. I love two. Try OPI Nail Envy original. Add a coat everyday for 3 days and remove it. Continue. I also adore Rossi Brite Plus with garlic. I have seen perfect results from both products.
You need a hand cream to use after showering and before bed time. I love Cetaphil. It is dermatologist recommended and approved for sensitive skin. It's fragrance free and adds just the right amount of moisture to keep your cuticles softened. Soft and healthy cuticles are crucial to nail health. While you're rubbing in a hand cream, you're actually stimulating nail growth by increasing blood flow.
I'm not against clipping cuticles, just keep it to a minimum. I'd leave it to a skilled professional. It's fine to occasionally clip a stray hang nail or dry skin. Be sure to soften it first!
The key to beautiful healthy nails is shaping. You need to use a lightly coarse file and begin shaping from side to center. DO NOT SAW BACK AND FORTH! You could actually weaken the nails more! Finish by using the buffer side of your file to "seal" the edges of your nails. This will protect them from fraying which makes them prone to breakage.
Keep files everywhere, home, car, purse, the office. If you notice a tear, it's important have a file and 5 second nail glue handy for an emergency repair!
