Selling Clothes on eBay...

So you've decided you want to sell clothes on eBay.  Good for you!  Here are a few tips that will help make things alot easier for you.

  1. As with any other aspect of eBay, it's of utmost importance that you research.  There are literally thousands of other sellers on eBay that sell clothes.  If they are established sellers with great feedback (not too many negatives, quality feedback from buyers, etc.), check to see how they've been listing their auctions and see what's been working for them.  Don't copy what they do, but DO take notes.
  2. Always provide measurements.  This is an absolute must, as it will save you loads of time (and possibly unhappy buyers) in the long run.  When you don't list the measurements in the listing's description, 9 times out of 10 one of a couple of things will happen.  Either you will repeatedly get asked by someone what the measurements are, OR someone interested in your auction will see that no measurements are provided and move right along.  I've found that buyers sometimes don't want to click on the 'Ask Seller a Question' button either because the listing is almost over or they fear the seller won't bother to respond.  So it's just best to provide them from the get-go, because we all know sizes run differently from one manufacturer to the next.  And the last thing you want to happen is to sell someone a Large and it ends up fitting them like a Petite!
  3. Find a layout for your auction and stick with it.  In other words, if you start out stating your terms of service, shipping, and payment options...stick with it.  You'll later find that you're more likely to have repeat buyers if they can recognize your auctions distinctively from other sellers.  It makes buyers more at ease.
  4. Lastly, always outline everything upfront that is important (i.e. payment, shipping, refunds/returns, etc.).  If you only go to the post office on certain days of the week, put it in your listing.  If you only accept PayPal, put that in there too.  Buyers don't like to guess.

As a side note, I do want to mention that how you decide to list your listings is a personal choice.  Whatever duration, time and day of the week you feel comfortable with is what you should go with.  Lots of people advise others to list their items so that they will end on 'X' day at 'X' time.  This may work for them, but not necessarily for you.  It is a total trial and error, and it may take some time for you to find what truly works for you.

Packaging Clothes That Sold...

Now that your listing is over, what do you do?  Ship your item(s) to the winning buyers of course!  But first, here's some surefire tips on packaging your items to make certain they get to their destination in perfect condition...

  1. Always NEATLY fold the clothes that are being packaged.  And because you can't predict the weather or the handling of the mail carriers anywhere, it's best to protect the clothes with something.  I personally place my clothes inside of a large ziploc bag, but bubble wrap or tissue paper may do the trick if the quantity is sufficient.  And of course, if the clothes aren't going inside of a bubble envelope, always pad the box/envelope with tissue or newspaper.
  2. Remember...tape is our FRIEND!  If you are packaging the items inside of a USPS-provided box, place the items inside the box and TAPE IT UP!  Take care to cover all cracks, crevices, openings, etc. with GOOD thick tape.  This insures that nothing will "fall out", at least not because it's your fault.
  3. As a general rule, I usually include some sort of free gift with all my clothing purchases (a coupon, a piece of jewelry, a belt, etc.).  It's an added bonus and something unexpected to my buyers.  You'd be surprised at how far a little bit goes.

Now You're Ready to Ship!

Once your item is packaged, hurry and take it to the post office (or give it to your mailman).  Since this is pretty basic, there are only 2 tips here.

  1. Once you receive cleared payment (whether it be in the mail or via an online method like PayPal), ship the item off ASAP!  If you've promised in your listing to ship within 'x' amount of days, then by all means do so.  If anything arises and you MUST delay shipment, communication with your buyer is key.  Be polite, courteous, and most of all professional.  Only treat your buyer how you would like to b treated as a buyer.  It is not good practice to hold someone's item for a prolonged amount of time.
  2. Always get delivery confirmation!  No matter what you are shipping, get some sort of proof that you mailed it.  If you have a scale, you can print your postage right off the computer.  It is also good practice to buy insurance for items over $25 and for items that are breakable.  Because some buyers won't purchase the optional insurance, either require it or add it in with the cost of shipping.  It's better for both you and the buyer.

These tips won't only help you sell clothes, but it will also help you sell numerous amounts of other things.  If you use these rules as a guideline combined with experience along the way, you've already won the battle.  Good luck with your sales!
