Great Tips for Buying A Car Battery

There is nothing like a free battery. So save your battery receipts. If your battery ‘dies’ within the warranty period, then your battery receipt can give you a good discount for your new car battery. Remember, car batteries can be expensive.

The climate you live in decides the kind of battery your car must have. For example, you must buy batteries with higher CCA (Cold cranking amps) ratings for cold climates and higher HCA (Hot cranking amps) ratings for hot climates.

Always ask about the reserve capacity of the car. Reserve capacity is the capacity of a car to run on battery alone.

The two most common types of car batteries are low maintenance batteries and maintenance free batteries.

Maintenance free batteries have longer life, faster recharging, lesser terminal corrosion, and higher overcharge resistance. However, they are more likely to face deep discharge problems because of the higher shedding rate of the active plate material.

Low maintenance batteries work better in hot climates because the sealed battery does not permit any addition of water.

What should be the ideal size of your battery? Firstly, make sure that the new battery fits well and that the cables connect to the correct terminals. The terminals should never touch the car hood. Go for a battery that gives you more reserve capacity.

Never buy a battery that is more than six months old after its manufacturing date. An aging battery is a money killer. Check the warranty period of the battery you are purchasing.

While handling batteries, remove your jewelry and ensure that there is enough ventilation. Always wear goggles or eye safety gear. Read the battery manual well before handling the battery.

A well-maintained battery can last you for 2 years.
