First, I'll discuss four figure that are so good that they are considered "broken" (i.e., when they are used in the same squad, they are very hard to beat). Then, I'll list five of my favorite figures that I think are a bit under rated.
These first four figures often referred to as the "Broken Boba" squad. The 150 point version of this squad consists of 1 Boba Fett, Bounty Hunter (62 points), 1 Lobot (27 points), 2 Jedi Weapons Masters (26 points each), 1 R2-D2, 1 Astromech Droid (9 points). Two of the figures are from the Republic faction, and the other two are from the Fringe faction, so this is a great legal squad.
Boba Fett, Bounty Hunter (from the Bounty Hunter expansion set)

What can I say, he's considered the the best bounty hunter in the galaxy for a reason! He has great defense. You need a 20 to hit him when he's open, or a 24 with cover. He has 120 hit points (amongst the most in the game). Plus, he has Evade, so not only is he hard to hit, but half the he is hit by a non-adjacent enemy he won't take any damage anyway. He also has Mobile Attack, which means he can hide behind a wall, come out and shoot, and move back behind the wall again (it's hard to hit a character that's hiding behind a wall!). And as if all this weren't enough, he has Flight, which means he can move away from adjacent characters without provoking an attack of opportunity (a great way to prevent an adjacent enemy with melee attack from using their double or triple attack!). He also has great offense. He's +12 to hit, but his Bounty Hunter +6 ability means he's +18 to hit if shooting at a unique character. He has Accurate Shot (which means he can shoot at anyone he can see on the map) and twin attack (which means he can shoot them twice). He has Flamethrower 20, which means he can automatically causes 20 points of damage to one target plus each character adjacent to that target (without even having to roll the dice!). Finally, he has Disintegration, so if he rolls a natural 20, the target is immediately defeated no matter how many hit points they have left (you can't count on Disintegration, but it's definitely fun when it happens). All this for the bargain price of only 62 points!
Jedi Weapons Master (from the Champions of the Force expansion set)

Lobot (from the Universe expansion set)

At first glance, it may not seem like you are getting much for 27 points. But if you look again, you'll see Lobot's definitely worth it for several reasons. First, he has Fringe Reinforcements 20. That means you get to bring in 20 extra points of Fringe characters AFTER you see your opponents squad. So, if you need to increase your number activations, you can bring in up to six low point characters. If you need more offense, you can bring in Lando Calrissian, Dashing Scoundrel. If you want more defense, you can bring in a couple of Bodyguards. And the best thing is that if your opponent kills these 20 points worth of characters, they don't count toward his victory conditoin! The importance of flexibility this figure lets you have when building a squad cannot be overstated. And, as if this weren't enough, he also come with the Override special ability, which means you can open or close any door he can see. Door control can be a very fun and powerful part of the game (unless you're the one who's being locked in a room against your will!). Anyone using Lobot should keep in mind that he's an easy target/kill. So, you'll need to be careful with him (I often just lock him in a room and use him as an extra activation each round). If you lock him in a room and your opponent doesn't also have override or a figure with Demolition (which blows up doors), there is absolutely no way your opponent can touch him.
R2-D2 Astromech Droid (from the Revenge of the Sith expansion set)

Now for five other great figures that are very flexible and can be used in almost any squad.
Ugnaught (from the Champions of the Force expansion set)
