Have you looked for a good Alaskan book, but it seems that every person who has ever lived in Alaska has written about the state? Some books are excellent and some are just plain awful! I have lived in Alaska for over 10 years and have read them all. Here are, in my opinion, the Top Alaskan Books:
1. For A Traveling Guide: The Milepost ~ it has mile-by-mile info of what you will see (including points of interest) on your journey
2. Cookbook: Cooking Alaskan ~ a compilation of recipes from Alaskan Community Cookbooks - has everything from fish to moose to beaver to wild berries. It's a staple in my kitchen! (My favorite - unused- recipe starts: "Find One Porcupine and Club Until Dead.")
3. Historical Fiction about the State: Alaska by James Michener
4. Commercial Fishing: Working on the Edge or Coming Back Alive by Walker
5. Alaskan Indian Legends/ Stories: Two Old Women by Velma Wallis
6. About the Pipeline Days: Coming Into The Country by McPhee
7. Alaskan Bush Pilots: Wager With The Wind - The Don Sheldon Story
8. Small Town Life: If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name by Lende
9. Politics: Tales of Alaska's Bush Rat Governor - Jay Hammond
10. History: Ada Blackjack by J Niven - A well-written tale of Polar Explorers and a young Eskimo
woman.
11. The One Who Didn't Make It: Into the Wild by John Krakauer
Coming to Alaska & looking for a good field guide:
A Field Guide to the Birds of Alaska by Robert Armstrong
Wildflowers of Alaska by Verna Pratt
There are many other great Alaskan Fiction & Non-Fiction books out there, but this list will get you started on your quest for great Alaskan reading. ENJOY!
