Five years ago, the local churches in this semi-rural town got together to address the needs of the less fortunate. After several brainstorming sessions it was noted that many people do abuse the system when several churches or agencies offer the same services. The major complaint was that individuals who probably did not need services would go to every church in town and receive their services while those truly in need went without. It was also noted that some services could be added if everyone got together and pooled resources.
A non-profit agency was formed by the good citizens of this town and named Grace Ministries. This agency is able to provide a food pantry, prescription help, rent, utilities, and some gasoline services.
The people are well pleased with the offerings and those helped are to. It is run entirely by volunteers. I volunteered for 2 years and found this to be a very rewarding endeavor.
Maybe your town can benefit from this brief overview and find it within themselves to offer similar services.
