Wall pops.

What are they?

Where do they come from?

Whats the cause?

Should you find this guide useful, tag the 'Yes' button at the bottom.

Wall pops happen when your Bossons stick to painted walls.
The silver backing will adhere to the painted wall and when you remove your Bossons to clean or what have you, sometimes it sticks to the wall. As it does and you remove it sometimes the silver will 'pop' off a small area exposing the chalk below.

A wall painted five years ago and long dried will still stick and cause Wall pops.
And this will sometimes occur after only a week or two.

As a man of the woods just may have said...

"When in doubt, use a gasket!"

To help prevent Wall pops, use a gasket.

There are numerous things that can be used to form a gasket: clear plastic or cork stickems used for cabinet doors, small pieces of folded paper, newspaper, felt, all kinds of different items will suffice. Heck push a napkin back there.
Whatever your decision, do not stick it directly to the Bossons.

I have found the thin foam insulation placed inside computer laptop shipping boxes work great. It is a clear-whiteish color about 1/16 inch thick maybe less. This material can also be found from the local hardware stores and gift shops with the arrival of new items. The store owners will unpack and display their wares and discard this thin foam insulation along with the contents of the box. I get all I can feast on from a local Ace Hardware.

Your local crafts supply house may carry rolls of this material. Its about the thickness of lets say, five sheets of newspaper.

Here is how to make a custom formed gasket of whatever material you decide to use.
Lay your Bossons into a super soft towel face down. Bundle up the towel so as to make a nest. Be sure the middle of the nest is not in contact with something hard like the table top. Use two towels what the heck. Put one towel on the table, double or triple the thickness (fold the towel yeah?) then build the nest on top with the other towel.

Lay the foam backing on top and cut a square slightly larger than your piece.

Next, gently trace around the silver backing, just inside of the outer edge, the outline onto the foam backing, and cut out to shape. I use a Sharpie Marker so I don't have to do much more than 'touch' the foam.
Notch a horizontal or vertical slice (depending on the mounting type) where the mounting hook is located.
If your piece has a mounting ring, guesstimate where the ring will contact the hanger and cut near the top,
but inside of the ring.
Be sure to over-cut at the bottom, you can custom trim this to fit later. Keep in mind where the contact points will be...always at the bottom!

Attach the gasket to the nail or screw in the wall, then place your Bossons over the gasket.

You may have to trim the gasket shape a little to completely hide it behind your Bossons. It will fit better it you cut the gasket alittle bit bigger than the actual size. Better alittle to big than to small.
Then you can always custom trim to fit!

The trick to remember is: from the mounting area at the back (the hook ie: staple-ring-inset) and the bottom of the Bossons are usually the contact points on the wall. Mostly the bottom. Some of the wider Bossons like Romany, Desert Hawks, Highwayman and Captain Pierre le Grand etc. will have perhaps three or four contact points on the wall. Take a close look after you have mounted the piece to observe where the contact points are and modify the gasket as needed.

Should you decide this is not the way to go and perhaps think sticking something to the back side, like double-sided tape or Velcro or rubber baby buggie bumpers would be a better solution, keep in mind that once placed, removal will damage the silver backing exposing white chalk. Tape residue, though not always removable, can be softened with a small amount of Mineral Spirits aka: paint thinner. Blue painters tape can be placed on delicate wallpapers with no adverse effect, but that will not be the case with the silver backing on Bossons. So be careful, and to avoid damage, where possible use a gasket.

Another suggestion is for the mounting screw or nail you will use for attachment to the wall. A lot of times this causes chipping to the area around the staple-ring-inset while you try to find the darn screw-nail to meet the hook. Like fingernails on the chalkboard. Doink! Use a small amount of blue painters masking tape, or regular white masking tape over the top. Wrap the screw-nail head. Just the head. Too much may cause unsecure mounting. This will help prevent chipping to the area each time the piece gets rehung.

Be sure to angle the screw-nail into the wall with a downward slope so the Bossons will rest on the screw-nail with a downward gravity pull. If you live in earthquake country, use a short 4-5'' piece of string attached to the hanger, then to the screw-nail. If the house starts rockin, better your Bossons be doing a wall dance then a face plant!

Here are some example pictures.

Hope this helps.
