Goose Down Comforters - Down Proof Ticking/Fabric

If you've been shopping for a goose down comforter you might have seen in the description of the comforter "downproof fabric".  Have you ever wondered what that actually means?  I have.

The answer is simple.  The main purpose of the outside fabric or ticking on down comforters is to basically keep the down inside the comforter where it belongs.  Therefore the fabric must be "downproof".

Here's a few thing to consider about your comforters fabric.

Thread count for your goose down comforter fabric should be at least 200; 300 - 350 is optimal.

Thread Count is only part of the story when considering a fine downproof fabric for your comforter.  Even more important is the type and size of the yarn, and the density in which it is woven into fabric.  Traditional European weaving of down ticking consists of combining the appropriate size yarn necessary to provide durability over many years of use, a dense weave to keep the down inside the comforter, while maintaining a light airy feel.  If the yarn used is of high quality and woven correctly you don't need a high thread count to get the nice "soft" feel to the fabric.  That's not saying that the higher thread count comforter fabrics aren't any good - but just be educated that high thread count doesn't always mean it is the best fit for a down comforter ticking.

Here's a few of the more popular fabrics being used in todays goose down comforters

Classic Fabric

The light weight European twill weave and smooth finish of this fabric should not belie the essential nature of this classic down proof fabric.  It is one of the most densely woven and durable tickings available, capable of providing many years of comfort, enjoyment and use.  The sateen finish gives your down comforter a shimmering appearance.  Made of Egyptian Cotton at 300 thread count.

Jacquard Fabric

Similar to the classic fabric, with a simple but stately damask stripe. This is quickly becoming one of the most popular down tickings on the market today, with tested down proof qualities.  It is best known for adding a bit of "style" to the design of the down comforter.  Made of Egyptian Cotton at 300 thread count.

Batiste

This is one of the lightest down proof fabrics available. It adds very little weight while sleeping, and is ideal for lighter weight comforters.  A light weight cotton or silk duvet cover is recommended for fullest enjoyment.  It is cool and crisp to the touch and provides a light and airy feel.  Woven of Egyptian Cotton at 308 thread count.

Lyocell Sateen

More "cottony" than cotton best describes this ecologically friendly fabric.  The feel takes sateen to a whole new level.  This is tne first new natural fiber in decades now being made into a down proof ticking.  The cellulose based fabric feels like silk, but is 62% more absorbent than cotton - wicking away moisture for a very comfortable sleep.  It has the ability to drape and flow like silk also, allowing the down comforter to conform to every body curve.  This is woven of Austrian yarn at 263 thread count.
