I played the Ping TiSi driver for years. Other drivers came and went, but I could not find one I liked better. It was the BOMB in its day. One day, I finally tried the Titleist 905T. I hit it on 7 different trips to the driving range. A year later, I bought it. During that time and since, I tried a dozen others extensively. I am tagging some of those drivers to help narrow your approach to your next purchase and subsequent fairway drive.
About me: I am a top 1000 reviewer and most of my reviews are of golf equipment. I am 6'0", played baseball for 12 years. I have been playing golf since 2002. With good tempo, I get good dispersion, usually drive 275yds with a 112mph swing speed. On the other hand... I can power up and blast the ball, but cannot tell you where it will land. I can push, get stuck, slice and hook all in the same round when I try to clobber it. Add TEMPO --- and My long game is a strength. I can hit a driver with the best of them.
To start - The sound and quality of each of these clubs is solid and impressive. The sound, unlike some... If you've hit a Nike Yellow club (Sasq, Sumo) you know they sound like you're hitting a stone with an aluminum baseball bat. The ball goes, but doesn't sound natural.
Callaway Big Bertha 460 (BB460)- the red and black one with the white alaignment stripe. The stripe really helps with alignment a lot. I read reviews that people gained 20 yards and hit it dead straight. I don't believe it unless they are switching from ancient driver technology. The truth is, I lost a little distance. The shot dispersion is tighter. A good bit more forgiving on mishits. Shaft flex is very important on this model. The Aldilla NV55 stiff and 9 degree loft fluffed the ball up a bit higher than a 10.5 with the NV65 stiff. This 460 model is a great club for beginners and high handicappers. If this is your first nice club, you will love it. If you are switching from another high quality club, you may not see any long lasting improvement.
460 X and Hyper 460 X - same as the BB460 with a tad more distance and a little less forgiveness.
Ping G2 and G5 - very close to the Hyper X in performance and forgiveness. The G2 is a good deal. I really liked it a lot. I feel like the G5 is just a G2 in new clothes. I haven't tried the G10.
Ping TiSi and TiSi Tec. I cannot believe a club of this caliber is going so cheaply on eBay. What a serious bargain! I have one of these and I hit it every now and then. It is good enough to hang with many of today's 460 monsters for distance. It used to be the choice for long drive competitors. You can pick one of these up for between 25.00 and 50.00. the hosels are interchanged to compensate for draw and fade and loft. A 7.5 degree will hit like a 9.5 degree in most cases.
Titleist 905 T, S, and R (and I demoed the D1/D2 series for an hour) - These clubs suit my type of swing. I usually hit near the center of the face. When you hit the ball solid in the center on one of these clubs, the ball comes off the face hot. And the impact feels sweet and effortless - like butter. A little outside the center and you can still crank it, but the feeling isn't as pure. Hit it off center (toe, heel, or top it) and you will not like the result. If you hit a lot of shots like this, look at the BB460 above. If you can hit a solid shot, any of the Titleists will please you. I tried all of the ones I listed with similar results. You are really splitting hairs when you are looking for the differences in these. Read the manufacturer claims to confirm what they are supposed to do for you. I could not feel or see a real big difference in the previous two series. I will tell you these are excellent clubs, all.
All of the clubs I mentioned are very high quality. there is a clear difference between these and discount clubs. I didn't extensively try the Taylor Made or the Cobras, etc... but I know they are fine pieces of equipment, too. I am only commenting on the ones I put to the test.
To sum it up -The Callaway BB 460 is a forgiving club, the Titleist is more of a players club with a solid swing. The Ping TiSi is a fantastic deal. The others fall in between and will satisfy your need to crush the ball.
