The 6th and the 7th grade Golden Kites are scarce compared to campaign medals, but they are not rare. Golden Kite is popular because of its unique design and made of solid silver. It is a good looking medal.
Why buy defective ones when nice ones are always available? Over the years, I said this many times:
1. Buy the complete set with the box
2. Buy the medal with full gilt on the bird
3. Buy the set with nice interior pillow
4. Buy the set with all original fittings in excellent shape
5. Buy the set with strong silver or gold inscriptions on the box with no defects
Then you have a complete nice set that needs no upgrade. When one buys any collectible with problems, one can lose some sleep over it. Why go thru that? Dish out a few extra sheepskins and get the best you can afford. If you cannot afford to spend that extra few dollars, wait till you can. These Golden Kites will always be around.
Caveat Emptor on the 6th class award! This medal has to have a gold wash. Some that I see offered as the 6th class ain't nothing but a 7th class that toned to a golden hue. Some are even artificially toned using sulphur. It is best to stay away from the 6th class. You may make an argument and say the box said 6th 六 (if it came with the box). You could put a wig on Kojak, but that does not change anything. He is still BALD.
