This guide is intended to clarify buying and growing Golden Bamboo from eBay, and provide general information about the plant.  Although I am no bamboo expert, you will have knowledge of how to buy, plant and grow Golden bamboo from eBay after reading this guide.

ABOUT GOLDEN BAMBOO

Golden Bamboo, also known as Phyllostachys Aurea or Fishpole bamboo, is a running variety of bamboo, so this guide will address the running variety only.  The running variety of bamboo will send roots to "run" outwards from the stand and send up new plants. These baby bamboo plants are called culms.

Golden Bamboo gets a bad reputation because of its vigorous growth.  However, this growth can be controlled with little work, if done at the proper time of the growing season.  Simply mow the culms before they harden, or just break them with a toe kick. This vigorous growth is what many buyers want, so it depends on who you ask as to whether Golden Bamboo grows too fast or not.  Either way, Golden Bamboo is the most commonly cultivated species of Bamboo in the US, according to the American Bamboo Society.

Golden bamboo prefers the following growth conditions:
  • Full sun, but will grow in shade
  • 0-115 degrees F
  • Sandy Loam
  • 75% humidity
  • Warm summers
Golden Bamboo will grow up to 30 feet tall and 2.5 inches in diameter.

The stalk is a vivid green color when young, and matures to a golden color, especially in the sunlight.
The part of the plant that runs outward, under the soil is called the rhizome (shown here removed and placed on some Golden Bamboo foliage)

This rhizome is the most common and inexpensive way people buy bamboo on eBay.

The following paragraph outlines the typical bamboo sales process.
When some one buys bamboo from me, I dig and ship the rhizome the following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday via USPS priority mail to make sure the plants don't sit at the post office over the weekend. This means the bamboo is dug and shipped within 24 hours!   Most sellers will bundle the bamboo in several layers of plastic and spray the plants with moisture prior to shipment.  Next, the bamboo is tightly taped so the water won't leak out of the package.  I like to draw stars and smiley faces and hand write thank you, because I really love my job, and its a fun way to say "thanks".  The bamboo will arrive moist, and many customers report growth that occurs during the shipping process.  Digging and cutting the rhizomes seems to cause an immediate growth spurt. Rhizomes can send new culms at every node.  I encourage customers to plant the rhizomes as soon as they receive the package, but they can can withstand a few days delay, in most cases.

Many customers really like to buy established plants with foliage, already 48 inches high, but shipping these plants can cost more than the plant itself.  Considering eBay and shipping prices, rhizomes seem to be the best choice for large projects.

An option economical for eBayers who want growth similar to successfully established plants is buying a few Bamboo Balls , which are established plants, along with your order of rhizome .  You can plant the Bamboo Balls where you want the fastest and thickest growth and plant rhizomes all along the remainder of your line to make a row.  These root balls are shipped with far less dirt than large container plants and are less expensive to ship.  The Bamboo Balls are shipped at least four per flat rate box.  They arrive with plenty of dirt and root material to ensure a healthy transplant.

PLANTING GOLDEN BAMBOO

Golden Bamboo will grow great for you in a container or in the ground.  A window planter handles rhizomes nicely.

To plant the bamboo in the ground, dig a four inch or slightly deeper trench, as long and wide as your rhizome.  Next, put some loose dirt back into the trench.  Then place the rhizome in the trench, horizontally, so that the rhizome lays flat, as if you threw it down.  Be sure to place most of the roots facing down and the little buds at the nodes facing up.  It can be a little difficult to tell which way is up, but the bamboo will figure it out if you can't.  Cover the rhizome with about four inches of soil, water well, and add a little more dry soil on top to conserve moisture.  During the first week or two, the rhizomes prefer a daily watering until moist, but they still do need good drainage.  You should begin to see shoots either grown during shipment, or several weeks after planting.  The shoot will soon make leaves which will provide an indicator of hydration thereafter.  If the leaves are rolled up, the plant needs water.  If you feel you need to fertilize, use lawn fertilizer, as bamboo is basically a grass gone giant, like corn.

LONG-TERM CARE OF GOLDEN BAMBOO

To control the bamboo in the ground once established, just mow or kick the new culms as stated earlier; or you can install some wide (~10'') landscape barrier around your grove.  Bury the barrier at an angle facing away form the grove with two inches remaining above the ground.  The rhizome will hit the barrier, run up and out of the soil, where you can cut them before they grow back into the dirt on the other side of your barrier.

USES OF GOLDEN BAMBOO

The fast growth of Golden Bamboo makes it great for privacy fences, windbreaks, cane poles, edible bamboo, sound barriers, erosion control (plant this on a slope and watch it grab dirt), pools, patios, backyards, eastern ambiance, and craft projects.
