Are you thinking about getting up to date and going wireless ? Or, are you just trying to figure out how to install a network in your home or small office ? Well, let me help you out.....
I have been building custom computers and installing networks in homes and businesses for over 12 years now, and I want to pass on a little advice. Most of the equipment out there on the market is pretty good stuff, BUT, if you don't secure it correctly your looking for some trouble.
Heres what I mean:
Wired networks need to be planned (where your wiring will be laid) and then the 'Firewall' option in the router of your choice needs to be utilized (that means USED) for your own internet "surfing" safety. I've seen too many people, who have contacted me to repair their computers, who didn't take the time to "setup the firewall" and got invaded through their internet connection.
Wireless networks don't need nearly as much planning, since they are wireless. So, I suggest this is the route that you should go, BUT, a word of advice ..... USE ENCRYPTION (thats your security feature in the wireless router/access point), there are way too many deceitful people out there that love to drive around (war driving, its an actual sport !) and 'steal' your bandwidth and try to get into your computer through the internet connection you pay for, and then 'have their way' with your files and computer !!!
So, in conclusion, get up to 'speed', It's OK .... Just use the tools that are available to you on the equipment when you purchase it.
