1. What is Glass Etching?

Abrasive glass etching is based on two straightforward principles:

First, sharp particles of sand will chip your glass, or mirror surface causing exposed parts to look white or frosted.

Second, you can cover portions of your glass or mirror with our stencil patterns to resist the blasting process allowing the design part exposed where you want the etching process to create your design.

2. What are the different Techniques and Options to Etching?

Sandblasting process: Also called surface etching, there are many kits sold at your local hobby or stained glass shops. Remember the price of the kit often determines the finished results of your project.

Chemical process: Etching crème, there are many kits sold at your local hobby or stained glass shops. You prepare your surface the same system as sandblasting, then apply the crème according to the manufacturers instructions, let dry for the instructed amount of time, clean and you are finished with your project.

For today’s purposes, we are going to explain the chemical method of glass etching.

Introduction to Chemical Glass Etching:

Getting Started with Small Glass Project

STEP ONE:

Gather Your Essential Supplies:
  • Etching Crème
  • Pre-cut Stencil
  • Window Cleaner
  • Paper Towel
  • Bucket & Cloth Towel or Rag
  • Dishwashing Soap
  • Foam Brush to evenly apply etching creme
  • Vinyl or Rubber Gloves
  • Safety Glasses or Goggles
  • Masking or Painters Tape
  • Tape Measure
  • Carpenter's Square
  • Etch-All Cream
  • putty knife or squeegee
  • Plastic Sheeting or Drop Cloth
  • Timer

STEP TWO:

Prepare your Surface and Place your Pre Cut Stencil Design.
Start by washing your glass surface with window cleaner or vinegar. Be sure the surface is completely dry and lint-free before taping and adhering your stencil.

STEP THREE:

The Process of Etching your Glass Surface.
Please note that the etching creme is, by nature, a caustic substance. For safety reasons, you MUST wear protective vinyl gloves and be prepared to focus on your project while you are engaging in the etching process. Also, do not rub your face and protect your eyes.

Make sure you tape outside the stencil template. Do not allow etching creme to contact your skin, ceramic tile, porcelain sinks or surface you do not want etched.

Apply a thick coat of etching creme to the exposed cut out areas in the stencil, making sure the creme is evenly spread. Once all the cream is applied, use the putty knife or squeegee to float an even layer of the cream over the entire piece. Check corners and edges carefully. Read manufacturers directions for waiting time. Wait for the specified time and Do NOT leave your project unattended.

After specified waiting time has passed, carefully wipe the etching creme off the stencil and the glass surface with paper towels. Dispose of paper towels and your gloves.

STEP FOUR:

Cleaning Process and Revealing Your Glass Art.

After all the etching creme has been wiped away with paper towels, thoroughly wash the stencil and glass surface with warm water and dish soap to remove any residue. Remove the stencil off the glass.
Wash the glass thoroughly with window cleaner and paper towels. Admire your beautiful work!

The Architectural Flower and Leaf Element magnificently portrays the versatility of one stencil. By simply choosing different paint colors and accessories, the element can appear unique to its surroundings. Painted in a stately red and gold, it echoes the patterns of a crown. Colored with black and silver, it appears delicate and elegant, taking on the shape of an antique scroll design.

Go to Michaels Arts and Crafts Store to pick up your stencil paint and brush supplies. Create faux finish background paint techniques with Benjamin Moore or Behr products.

While stippling the acrylic paint on to the substrate (wall, ceiling, floor, furnishings) through the stencil is a relatively easy process to learn, the production of the stencil itself demands a degree of design skill. The countless combinations of symbols, forms, and paint colors with this stencil technique means that your only limit is your imagination!
