When gift giving and gift buying, remember that the presentation of the gift is more important that the gift. If you have the skills needed to attractively wrap the gift in fine paper and hand tied ribbon (not pre-made or paper ribbon) then great, if you cannot then have it wrapped by a professional. At no time is giving a gift in a Gift Bag appropriate...all a Gift Bag means is that you didn't care enough to even attempt to wrap the gift.
Men are usually terrible at wrapping, but their hearts are always in the right place, so cut them a little space when they've made the attempt. Their hearts are saying, "Look what I did to impress you!" I've had men wrap gifts in painters paper and blue masking tape, and were very proud of their presentation of the gift, and they were correct in the art of gift giving.
When in a pinch, using the Sunday paper comic section is a great source of gift wrapping for a child's gift. I've even seen gifts wrapped attractively using aluminum foil and satin ribbons. So, be creative, try different technics, but always wrap the gift and never use a gift bag!
Shop for wrapping paper and fabric ribbon just after Christmas, or in the mid-Summer sales, you'll find fabric ribbon for pennies. Stores will not carry-over products from a previous season, and are willing to make great price reductions to get you into their store for the sales. Best place for these sales are at craft and fabric stores.
Practice makes perfect, and you'll enjoy gift giving more with the effort you're presenting to the recipient! Good Luck!
