I get these funny looks or a "what's that?" when I tell people that we use Parent's Choice (Walmart's brand).  Generic diapers or wipes?  Sure!  Store brand Milk or pizza?  Right on!  But tell someone you use anything other than the mainstream Enfamil, Similac, or Carnation, and...well, you are now officially a bad parent and Grand Prize winner for Worst Mother of the Year Award.  Yeah, whatever.

You know what, generic formula is just like the expensive stuff and is available both with and without the DHA and ARA.  We don't qualify for WIC, and without it, we can't afford the brand name formula, even with all those great coupons the brand name formula manufacturers send me.

Generic formula has to meet the same guidelines set down by the FDA just like Enfamil or Similac, and it's about HALF the price!!  It's even less expensive than that if you can get it on eBay for a good deal.  Imagine spending around $40-$50 a month for formula instead of $100; again, less if you get a good deal here somewhere.

Don't take my word for it, look up the comparisons.  On the can of Parent's Choice you can see that the formulation is the same as the national (read, expensive) brands so your baby is getting the same nutrition at a much better value.

Parent's Choice is made by PBM Products, they also make the following:
  • Bright Beginnings
  • Target
  • Albertsons
  • Toys R Us
  • Walgreens
  • CVS
  • and many, many other store brands (check out their website for a complete listing of partners)
While not available in the Nutramigen or Alimentum or anything like that in generic (which sucks because while regular is expensive, that stuff costs a fortune), they do make regular, Soy, and often Lactose Free, Organic, and Stage 2 formulas.  Target even has their brand of the Enfamil Gentlease.  There are often both powdered and liquid versions available.

Sam's Club has a 3lb tub of Members Mark formula (also from PBM) for $19.98...how cheap is that?  WalMart has the Parent's Choice for $11.88 for the 25.7oz tub.  The same 25oz size tub of Enfamil at WalMart is pushing $25!

By using generic formula, I can afford to feed my daughter a healthy, age-appropriate diet and still give her all the things she needs (that is, more toys!).  Yes, kids are expensive and worth every penny, but coupons and off brands help make the need for Johnny the Loan Shark less likely.

I hope this has been helpful to you, I certainly had my own reservations about using off brand formula until I did some research.  Good luck in your own parenting adventures.
