General guide to buying fine jewelry on eBay
1. Carefully read the title and description. Email your seller if you are uncertain about anything.
2. Note the measurements of the stones and the item. Use a ruler to draw a box based on the measurements. Once you have done this a few times those measurements will make sense. Keep in mind you can't judge the size of something from a photo.
3. Note the total gram weight of the item. With a little simple math it is easy to determine the weight of the precious metal. 5 carats = 1 gram. Often the total gram weight will be your best friend determining how much to bid. Prices change daily but the current price of all precious metals is always available online.
4. When diamonds are in the piece look for the diamond grading. You must understand diamond grading to avoid being disappointed. Much information is available on this subject online, educate yourself.
5. When the item includes gemstones most want to know if it's a lab created stone, simulated stone or natural. Read the description carefully and if this information is not clear ask your seller a question.
6. Now is a good time to investigate your seller. Read the feedback! Look at the feedback percent. 96% may sound good but keep in mind compared to a seller with 99 percent your chances of being disappointed are 4 times greater. How long has this seller been on eBay? Read the comments don't just go by the numbers.
7. So you have done your homework on the item and you have investigated your seller, next it's time to make a decision on how much you are willing to pay. Take care to evaluate all the information carefully, carat weight (and grading if diamonds), gram weight of the precious metal and the credibility of the seller. Should any of the information you require not be in the description ask the seller.
8. You have determined how much you are willing to pay so look at your shipping options and costs. Once again if shipping is not stated ask your seller. You must know how it will be shipped, how much it will cost and if it will be insured. I strongly recommend that fine jewelry always be insured.
9. You feel good about your seller, you have determined how much you are willing pay so it's time to look for your payment options. Sellers often accept different payment methods, now is the time to assure one of those options is satisfactory. You can always email your seller and ask (BEFORE BIDDING) if you would like to use a payment method not offered.
10. Now you are an educated buyer. Use what you have learned to fill your jewelry box and save a fair piece of your hard earned money.
